(From Tobias Funeral Home)Pastor Betty Lou Cummings, 90, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 6, 2023. She was born in Carthage, MO August 30, 1932 to the late Rev. George F. and Edith P. (Henry) Cummings. She is also preceded in death by her best friend and fellow missionary, Carol Dimbath.
Betty is survived by close friends David and Veronica Huliba, Joann Schuster family, and the rest of her Parkview church family.
Betty gave her life to Jesus at an early age and spent a lifetime fulfilling her call to serving Him. In 1950, she graduated HS in Carthage, MO and attended Trevecca Nazarene University graduating in 1956. She furthered her education at Univ. of California and also Univ. of South Africa. Her first assignment was teaching 3rd grade in Webb City, MO.
In 1960, Betty left for Manzini, Swaziland where she served as a Missionary until 1972. Throughout her years in remote Africa, she taught in Mazini Nazarene HS and was Principal in the Nazarene Teacher Training College. She was Matron of the Women’s Dormitory in charge of 150 boarding students. Her duties also included teaching and preaching under a tree at an outstation church, until a proper building was constructed. On those Sundays at the outstation, Betty always tried to select a shade tree in the field with the fewest number of cattle roaming around for their safety, and the worship service usually lasted several hours!
Due to health reasons, Betty returned to the states in 1972 teaching 6th grade in MO the next 3 years while attending her home church helping with music, visitation, and other assignments. In 1975, Betty moved to Dayton, OH and taught 6th grade at Dayton Christian until 1988. Later that year, she became full time Associate Pastor at Parkview Church of the Nazarene until her retirement in 1998. Even in retirement, she continued with short-term assignments around town until 2004.
