Nancy Sue Melugin Cowan, 77, died Tuesday, May 6, 2014,at St. Luke¹s Nursing Home where she had resided for almost three years.
She was born March 10, 1937, to Georgia and Orphia Melugin, inCarterville. She attended Carterville High School where she excelled in home economics. She won her school a new oven in a nationwide General Electric cooking competition during her senior year.
She married Dewayne Cowan on July 31, 1956, in Carthage. She was a homemaker, gardener and she carried out her love of cooking her entire life preparing new and interesting recipes and directing the menu for all the family holiday gatherings. She and her husband, Dewayne, were co-owners of Midwest Ag Supply along with their best friends Donna and Dale Wickstrom. Dewayne preceded her in death on June 24, 2012.
Survivors include three daughters, Carol Stark and Diana Adams, both of Joplin, and Marcia Snyder and husband, Pat, of Carthage; a sister, Joyce Lewis, state of California; grandchildren Craig Stark, and wife, Christen, Carthage; Katie Snyder, Pittsburg, Kansas.; Joe Stark and wife, Katy, Ozark; Adam Buster and wife, Nicki, Oronogo; Emily Snyder, Carthage; Levi Snyder,Jennie Snyder and Zachary Thornton, all of Carthage; fivegreat-grandchildren, Austyn Maggard, Eveyln Stark and Henry Stark, all of Carthage, and Garrett and Sam Stark, of Ozark. She is also survived bynumerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are siblings Floyd Melugin, Vernis Patterson, Juanita Atchison, Doris Wilson, Jack Melugin, Patty Barton and Roxanna Kidwell.
Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday May 9, 2014 at Ulmer Funeral Home,Carthage, with Graveside services at 2 p.m. Friday May 9, 2014 at Fasken Cemetery, east of Carthage. Officiating will be Bob Teegarden of Center Point Christian Church. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
