Gladys E. Rogers, age 99, formerly of Joplin, passed away at 8:00 a.m. Friday, April 25, 2014 at the home of her daughter in Kansas City after an illness.
Gladys was born January 7, 1915 in Ft. Scott, Kansas to the late Noah Collins and Mary Nelson Collins and had lived in the Joplin area most of her life before moving to Kansas City five years ago. She graduated from Ft. Scott High School in 1934.
She was the former owner and operator of Gladys’s BBQ in Joplin. She had also worked in Central Supply at Mercy Hospital in Ft. Scott. Gladys was a humanitarian, always looking to help anyone she could. She served as a home health aide and visited patients in nursing homes until she was 84 years old. She would bake pumpkin and banana bread and deliver to those not able to get out themselves.
Gladys was a longtime member of Unity Baptist Church, where she held several offices and sang in the choir. She was also a former member of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her first husband and father to her four children, John R. Wrench. She was also preceded in death by a second husband, Carey Rogers.
In addition to her spouses, Gladys was the last of five brothers and sisters.
Survivors include her children, Norma Simpson, Kansas City, Missouri, Anita Douglas (and husband Lee), Joplin, William Wrench (and wife Clifford), Brownsville, Texas, Marva Jones, Bear, Delaware; 17 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; 9 great great grandchildren; and several other extended family members.
Services are planned for Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Rufus Kelly will officiate. Interment will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the mortuary.
