Helen I. (Selvey) Carr, age 97, of Lamar, passed away Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Barton County Memorial Hospital.
Helen was born December 8, 1916, at Lamar, one of the eleven children of Roy and Essie (McManis) Selvey. On March 13, 1938 at the Selvey family home, Helen married Herbert Harold Carr who preceded her in death February 21, 1981. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jim Carr in 1996; a grandson, Peter Carr in 2008; four brothers, Martin, Gene, Leland, and Bob Selvey, and a sister, Lorene Norwood.
Helen and Herb farmed in Barton County for 24 years, first in the Forest Grove community, then 15 miles south of Lamar in the Duval neighborhood, and the last 12 years on a farm 10 miles southeast of Jasper. After moving to Carthage in 1962, Helen began an 18 year career as a piece goods department manager and buyer for Belk-Simpson on the Carthage Square. Many will remember her daily KDMO radio broadcast of sewing tips and Belk’s promotion. KK Highway, just south of Lamar has been her home for the past 40 years. Helen was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Lamar and she truly enjoyed the friendship and fellowship of her church family and many friends. She was an accomplished seamstress, a hospitable homemaker, and a natural care-giver throughout her life. Always active in her community, Helen volunteered at Good Samaritan, delivered Meals-on-Wheels, was a Pink Lady at Barton County Memorial Hospital, and a member of Atheneum, Sew & So Club, and 20th Century Club. She was the last surviving member of Lamar High School Class of 1935.
Survivors include three sons, Jon (Sheila) Carr, Carthage, Bob (Marti) Carr, Joplin, Scott (Lexa) Carr, Lenexa, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Amy (Joel) Beck, Jeff (Jennie) Carr, Tara (Jay) Pearson, Greg Carr, Erin Carr, Kristin Carr, and Ryan Carr; eleven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; four brothers, Keith Selvey, Carl (Beverly) Selvey, Don (Thelma) Selvey, all of Lamar, and Ron (Donna) Selvey, Bolivar, Missouri; a sister, Louise Caruthers, Lamar; and a large extended family.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 28th at First Baptist Church of Lamar with Pastor Robb Hodson officiating. Burial will be in Lake Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Daniel Funeral Home.
