Opal Shrum

Opal Rowena Shrum, passed away May 18, 2016, at St Luke’s Nursing Home of Carthage, Missouri. 

Opal was born May 13, 1922 in Clarksville, Arkansas to William H. Nordin and Lela Reynolds Nordin. Opal was married to Bert J. Shrum on January 7, 1943 in Russellville, Arkansas, He preceded her in death on February 1st 2005. She was employed at the Kaiser Fraiser Shipyard and welded on the Victory ships while her husband served in the Armed Forces in the South Pacific area, she was known as a Rosie the Riveter. She was a McCune-Brooks, Grey lady for 40 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church and the Missionary Guild. She taught Sunday school for 35 years there. She loved working with the kids and watched a lot of them grow up to be Christian adults in the church. She enjoyed singing and was a member of the choir. She loved art and her walls covered with work she had done. 

Survivors include a son Steve whom she loved very much and his wife Judy of Kansas City, two cousins Bettie McGee and husband Louis of Caralton, Texas, and Dorothy Manley of Stevensville, Texas, along with a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister Alta McCoy, one brother Otis Nordin, one nephew, Paul Nordin and one Niece Joyce McCoy. 

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday May 21, 2016 at Ulmer Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday May 20, 2016 at Ulmer Funeral Home. Burial will be at Fullerton Cemetery. Online condolences can be made at www,ulmerfh.com.
