Loyd Naten

(From Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary)

Bishop Loyd Lee Naten, 74, of Joplin, Missouri, passed into eternity on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at Mercy Hospital.

Loyd was born on December 16, 1943 to Orval Lee and Mary Jane Kelley Naten in Bakersfield, California. Loyd graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1961. Loyd married Trisha Welch Naten on May 22, 1970 in Bakersfield, California. They had three daughters, Tonya, Candi and Kari.

Loyd was first credentialed with the Pentecostal Church of God in 1973 and began pastoring his first church in Findlay, Ohio that same year. Over the years, Loyd went on to pastorates in Bakersfield, El Cajon and La Habra, California. While pastoring in La Habra, Loyd also served as district presbyter for the Southern California District.

Loyd served as secretary for the Southern California District of the PCG for eight years and as district bishop for eight years. During his tenure as Southern California bishop, he also served as an assistant general bishop for the Southwestern Region of the PCG for four years.

In June, 2003 he was elected to serve as the director of World Missions, a role he filled until he was elected as the general secretary in 2011. Loyd went on to serve as the general bishop beginning in 2015, retiring from full-time ministry in 2017.

Loyd was the perfect definition of a “family man.” He was a friend to many and no one was a stranger for long. The personal relationships he made with friends around the globe were the most valuable of his possessions. His smile, zeal for living, and optimistic attitude were contagious. Not only was he always more than willing to lend a helping hand, donate time and money, and volunteer his talents, he could tell the best stories and play pranks that made him laugh for months and years to come.

Loyd was preceded in death by his father, Orval; mother, Mary; and brother, Floyd.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Trisha; daughters Tonya and her husband Dr. Steve Archer (Kansas City, Missouri), Candi and her husband Dwayne Thompson (Joplin, Missouri), and Kari and her husband Matthew Carrillo (Fort Worth, Texas); as well as twelve grandchildren. Additional survivors include his sister, Elizabeth; brother, Bud (Dorothy); sister-in-law, Maderia Naten; and many other extended family members.

Services for Bishop Loyd Naten are 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at Joplin Family Worship Center with Rev. Daniel Wermuth, II, officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to the Pentecostal Church of God World Missions General Fund.

Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
