Earl Scheffler

Earl Duane Scheffler, age 81, Joplin, passed away on Monday, March 2, 2015 at Freeman West Hospital after a brief illness.

Earl was born December 13, 1933 in Madison County, Nebraska, son of the late Harold Scheffler and Hilda Schulte Scheffler. He graduated from Madison County High School, and then attended Nebraska Christian College in Norfolk, Nebraska, where he worked on his Degree in Theology. He met Alice Zimmerman while in school, and the two were married on June 5, 1955.

They moved to Denver, Colorado where he worked for Meadow Gold Dairy and then Quality Checked Dairy from 1962 until 1976, at which time he moved to Newton County, Missouri where he began Scheffler Distributing.

He was a member of Villa Heights Christian Church in Joplin. He loved to fly, and after acquiring his pilot's license, was known to spend time at the Joplin Airport, especially hanging out at Mizzou Aviation. He also enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing.

In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 60 years, Alice, in 2014; and his sister, Dorothy Crandall.

Survivors include his sons, Randy Scheffler and wife Janet, and Jonathan Scheffler both of Joplin; daughters, Barbara Lewis and husband Bobby, Beckie Forest and husband Chuck, Trish Day and husband Danny all of Joplin, and Karen Deering and husband Chris of Neosho, Missouri; a brother, Marland Scheffler of Granby, Missouri; a sister, Kathy Hickford and husband Barry of Tucson, Arizona; 10 grandchildren, Candy Routledge and husband Cory, David Scheffler, James Day, Christiana Walker, Travis Scheffler, Heidi Scheffler, Renee Forest, Charles Forest, Robert Day and wife Chelsea, and Daniel Day; great-grandchildren, Josie Clark and Kaydence Lassiter.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, March 9, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Villa Heights Christian Church, 2650 E. 7th, Joplin, Missouri with Truman Brady, Minister officiating.

Family will visit with friends following the service at the church.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the King's Open Hands Program, care of Villa Heights Christian Church.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
