Joe Brown

Joe R. Brown, 82, Carthage, passed away Thursday, March 26, 2015 at his home after a lengthy illness.  Joe Richard Brown was born October 1, 1932 in Gracemont, Oklahoma; a son of the late Clarence Lester Brown and Mamie King Brown.  Joe was a graduate of Oney High School, Oney, OK, Class of 1952, received his B.S. degree from Oklahoma City University, Oklahoma City, OK and his M.S. degree from Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, Kansas.  He married Mary Jo Coker on August 19, 1957 in Miami, OK; she survives.  Early in his career, Joe was an engineer for Boeing Aircraft, Sibley Engineering and Medco; he later settled into teaching, math and drafting in Orlando, FL, Mounds, OK and later at Carthage R-9 Schools and East Newton School System.  He was a U.S. Army veteran during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the First Baptist Church, Carthage where he was a Sunday school teacher.

Additional survivors include, two daughters; Peggy (George) Ostrander, Plano, Texas and Karen (Gary) Swain, Naples, Florida; a son, Richard A. (Melissa) Brown, Alamagordo, New Mexico; a sister, Ida Davis, Carthage and Fern Abbott, Gracemont, OK; three brothers, George Brown and Jerry (Linda) Brown of Atascadero, California, Tom (Alice) Brown, Champagne, Illinois; 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and 4 brothers.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 – 7:00 PM, Wednesday, April 1, 2015 in the Knell Mortuary, Carthage.  Services will be held at 3:00 PM, Thursday, April 2, 2015 in the First Baptist Church, Carthage.  Interment will follow at Park Cemetery, Carthage.  Memorial gifts are suggested to the Carthage R-9 Foundation or the Gideon’s International.  Online condolences may be expressed through www.knellmortuary.com.
