Davy and Natalie Lloyd

(From Clark Funeral Home)

Natalie Elizabeth Lloyd, beloved daughter of Ben and Naomi Baker, entered the gates of Heaven on Thursday, May 23, 2024, in Port au Prince, Haiti.

Natalie was born on March 2, 2003, in Joplin, Missouri and was a lifelong resident of Neosho. She attended Ozark Christian Academy and Ozark Bible Institute and College.

Natalie loved and was fiercely loved in return by her family. She had a special place in her heart for Ezra, whom she babysat until she married.

Natalie had a mother’s heart and loved the children in the orphanage in Haiti from the moment of her first trip there prior to her marriage to Davy. The nurturing spirit she felt toward Ezra quickly went out to a little boy named Kelly from the orphanage. A large majority of the pictures she sent to family in the states included little Kelly, whom Davy accused her of turning into a “brat”, but Kelly called her ‘momma."

Natalie is survived by her father and mother, Ben,and Naomi (Thomas) Baker of Neosho, sisters, Sylvia and Sydney Baker of the home and Nicole (Baker) Bridges, who married Joel Bridges in January of 2024, the last time Davy and Natalie were in the United States.

Also surviving are grandparents, Bobby and Trica Thomas of Joplin, Ron and Linda Baker of London, Kentucky, great grandparents, Caroline Carpenter of Merced, California, Mary Rose Sizemore of Trafalgar, Indiana, Eugene Baker, Sr. of Morgantown, Indiana, aunts and uncles, Bobby and Kelly Thomas of Joplin, Nathan and Jennifer Thomas of Luganville, Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu, Robert and Ruth (Thomas) Taylor of Goodman, Joe and Brittany Baker of London, Kentucky, Jesse and Morgan Baker of Martinsville, Indiana, Phil and Kendsey Baker of Martinsville, Indiana, Bryan and Sarah (Baker) McKelvey of Dayton, Ohio, Ronnie and Jessica Baker of Greenwood, Indiana, Stephen and Hannah (Baker) Wright of Bedford, Indiana; eight Thomas first cousins and twenty-three Baker first cousins and a host of extended family from all over the country and world.

David Joseph Lloyd, III, (Davy), was born on July 3, 2000, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Davy is the oldest child of David and Alicia Lloyd. Soon after he was born, Davy went to Haiti. His first language was Haitian Kreyol. He loved his Haitian brothers and sisters, whom he grew up with at the House of Compassion.

Davy, his sister, Hannah and Haitian sister, Miriam, were kidnapped when Davy was just five years old. They were miraculously released the next day with no ransom paid. Davy and his family were also in Haiti during the 2010 earthquake which killed an estimated 200,000 people and destroyed a large portion of Port-au-Prince.

Davy graduated high school at Good Hope Christian Academy in Haiti in 2018. He graduated Ozark Bible Institute and College in Neosho with honors in April of 2022.

Having grown up in Haiti, Davy witnessed the Haitian people’s daily struggle for survival. He was able to relate to them which made him a great missionary to Haiti. Davy was an unusually gifted young man. He had developed into a powerful preacher, he was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, and he had a natural ability as a constructor, building his own home when he was just twenty-one years old.

Davy worked with his uncle, Travis McCrate, at their tractor dealership in Tulsa, Oklahoma during several summers, and could fix just about everything his uncle Travis threw at him. Davy always had a smile on his face and everyone who knew him loved him.

Davy is survived by his father and mother, David, and Alicia (McCrate) Lloyd, sister, Hannah Cornett and husband, Dakota, his brother, Samuel; grandparents, David and Donna Lloyd and Mike and Wanda McCrate, many aunts, uncles, cousins and his family in Haiti.

Davy and Natalie began their life together on June 18, 2022. There were married at Bible Holiness Assembly of God in Neosho, and it was a wedding of fairy tale proportions. Davy and Natalie made their home here in Neosho, living in the home that Davy had built for their lives together. They attended Bible Holiness Assembly of God. In January of 2023, they became full-time missionaries, serving under Missions in Haiti, Inc. They considered Neosho as their home when they were stateside.

Visitation will be Monday from 3-7 pm, and the funeral will be at 10 am on Tuesday. There will be a live stream link posted for those not able to attend. The location will be Bible Holiness church in Neosho on 906 N Summit Street.

Curtis Ferneau

(From Derfelt Funeral Home)

Curtis Jerry Ferneau left this earth on Memorial Day at approximately 4:30 a.m. after a sudden and short illness. He was 89.

Dad was a lifelong Joplin resident and told many stories of growing up in a time now forgotten by most. He loved fishing and hunting with his brother Jim. They spent their childhood squirrel hunting, fishing shoal creek and swimming at Leonard Park.

Our grandma Ferneau told a story once of how she went to the riverbank near Reddings Mill to check on dad and Jim because a big storm had come through. They were eating pancakes and she asked how they had mixed the batter. They told her they had used the minnow bucket! Dad was also a lifelong baseball fan and in 1950 was fortunate enough to batboy for Mickey Mantle at the old Miners Park in Joplin.

After graduating from Joplin High in 1952 dad attended Joplin Junior College and prepared himself for a career in engineering. He later worked as a tool designer and NC programmer at Rocketdyne in Neosho, an aerospace company where rocket and missile engines were designed, built and tested. In the late 60's dad assisted in the design of the Saturn 5 rocket engine used in the Apollo 11 first ever moon landing. Dad spent the last 26 years of his career working at RGS engineering in Joplin.

Dad married our mother, Sharon K Sanders on February 9th 1963. There is no doubt mom was dads best friend and he knew he was lucky to have her. They raised their family in our small rock house on Ozark street one block from Leonard park with love, respect and discipline. We had little money but we were rich in many ways. They both loved their kids enough to tell us no and we were better off for it. Later, they enjoyed trips together to places like Charleston SC and Laughlin NV. Dad lost his best friend a few months shy of their 50th wedding anniversary. He was never the same and we fully understand.

Dad's work ethic was unquestioned. He had a tough no excuses outlook on life but also taught us fairness, reflection and reality. My dad once said to me, "keep plugin". This was his way of telling me don't give up. I won't dad. None of us will. Thanks for being our dad.

Dad is survived by his brother Jim of Columbia, daughter Debbie of Joplin, son Tim of Joplin, son Jeff of Ozark, Missouri, as well as numerous grandchildren.

Mr. Ferneau has been entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home of Galena for cremation. The family will host a graveside memorial service at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin, MO. Online condolences may be expressed at www.derfeltfuneralhomes.com.

Paula Hershey

(From Knell Mortuary)

Paula Marie Hershey, 47, Carthage, Missouri, a beacon of love and friendship, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2024, at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, Missouri.

She grew up in the heart of Iowa, where she attended St. Charles High School and graduated in the class of 1994. Her youthful energy and determination were the pillars upon which she built a successful career. Paula's professional journey was diverse and fulfilling. She began as a dedicated hotel manager, later channeled her creativity into owning a home decor store, and most recently applied her skills in assembly at H.E. Williams in Carthage. Her work ethic and amiable nature left an indelible mark on everyone she worked with. After spending 24 years with the love of her life, 8 of which being married, she was married to Kevin Hershey on May 27, 2016, in Carthage, Missouri.

Survivors include her husband, Kevin Hershey; her children, Albert Hershey, Dylan Hershey, Hunter Hershey, and Harlie Hodge (Austin); ten grandchildren; her mother, Pam Monahan; her sister, Lisa Renae Monahan; and her mother-in-law, Joyce Hershey. Paula's life was touched by many, including extended family and a host of friends who will miss her deeply. She was preceded in death by her father, Steven Monahan; and a son, Jason Hershey.

Paula's interests were a reflection of her joyous approach to life. She found solace and excitement in fishing for Spoonbill, an activity that allowed her to embrace nature's wonders. Her passion for collecting Breyer horses was more than a hobby; it was a testament to her appreciation for beauty and craftsmanship. Above all, Paula's greatest interest was her family. The love she poured into every family gathering, every shared meal, and every quiet moment at home was the truest expression of her heart.

Per Paula’s wishes, there was cremation. Online condolences may be expressed through www.knellmortuary.com.

Bruce Silverberg

(From Louis Memorial Chapel)

Dr. Bruce Silverberg, 69, of Stilwell, KS passed on May 27, 2024. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 30 at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, 9501 159th St., Overland Park, KS 66221.

Bruce was born on June 9, 1954 to Raymond and the late Joan Silverberg in St. Louis, MO.

Growing up, he was the oldest of 4 siblings and was intelligent, competitive, and had a wild streak. In high school, he excelled as an athlete, a trumpet player, and of course as an academia graduating at the top of his class out of roughly 700 students.

Although Bruce loved music and aimed to be a musician, his mother strongly encouraged him to become a doctor, filling out his medical school application. He was accepted into The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine immediately after high school where he earned his medical degree. Bruce then completed residencies in general surgery, plastic surgery, and microvascular hand surgery at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, University of Chicago, and University of Kentucky.

Bruce’s dedication to his medical practice served to be more than a career but rather a lifestyle. His precise performance of life-altering surgeries brought thousands of patients healing, comfort, and hope.
Bruce’s profession also brought him to Joplin, MO where he met Shamshinur, his loving wife of the past 19 years. Bruce and Shamshinur created a beautiful home together where they enjoyed hosting friends and family, bonded over music and movies, explored different cultures, and traversed the different facets of spirituality.

While Bruce found much fulfillment in his life, he also prided himself in creating a large family. Bruce’s children hold numerous memories of him, each unique to their own lives and personalities. Although each of his children can share different stories of Bruce, all will forever envision him relaxing in the basement on the leather couch or feet up in a reclining chair, petting his beloved animals, with a tiny scent of Marlboro Reds lingering in air. Bruce had a different way of expressing love than most but his children will all be forever grateful for the random stories and pieces of advice their dad seemed to sprinkle throughout conversations.

Bruce clearly stayed extremely busy, but he absolutely relished the time spent with the amazing friends he collected over the years. His retirement (2022) was short lived, yet he thoroughly enjoyed eating at Denny’s with Don, and spent invaluable time spent with Alan, motorcycle and bicycle rides, dining with the ROMEO club, and sharpening his bowling skills with the crew.

Bruce is survived by his beloved wife Shamshinur; children: Shawn Silverberg, Carrie Kampschmidt (Luke), Jamie Hess (Brandon), Rachael Silverberg, Michael Silverberg, and Sunny Ablatt; father: Raymond Silverberg; brother, Fletcher Silverberg (Gayle); sisters: Rose Rose (Marty) and Anita Silverberg; grandchildren: Avi, Ava, Kaley, Austin, and Genevieve.

Jo Beers

(From Schowengerdt Funeral Home)

Alice Joanne Beers, age 90, of Joplin, Missouri, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, May 25, 2024. Known all her life as “Jo”, she was born February 10, 1934 in Miller, Cleburne County, Arkansas, the daughter of Roy Elmer and Gladys Ferol (Dugger) Burns.

As a child of the 1930s and 40s in the South, she grew up with no electricity and no running water. Their bathroom was an outhouse, which she said was cold in the winter and hot in the summer.

The family grew a huge garden and canned all the vegetables which were then stored in the cellar. They always had chickens, a milk cow and also raised a cow and pig to butcher for meat. They had a few apple trees and picked blackberries and huckleberries to make jams and pies. Jo aways said she guessed they were poor growing up but she never went hungry and had everything she needed to thrive with lots of love in the home.

Jo went to a two-room school with separate outhouses for girls and boys. The number one game they played outside was baseball. She was only able to complete 8th grade and left school to work in the fields to help support the family. This was not an uncommon practice for the time. Though she had very little schooling, she was highly educated about life in general and full of good ole common sense.

She married Harold Dee Wood on September 17, 1949 in Heber Springs, Arkansas. They had three children, then moved to California and had another child. They later divorced. Jo met Donald Eugene Beers in 1962 and after ten years together, they married December 1, 1972 in McAlester, Oklahoma. This union produced one daughter.

Jo and Don moved to Adrian, Missouri in 1968 and lived there until they retired in 1999 when they moved to Joplin, Missouri and lived next door to their daughter, Carolyn Hartsell and husband Eddie. While living in Adrian, Jo started a day-care which she ran for a little over 20 years. She loved the children she took care of and said they helped keep her young. In her lifetime she enjoyed embroidering, music and was an avid reader. She also loved to dance, doing the jitter bug with Don in their younger years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Billy and Max Burns; two sons, Bill and Steve Wood; two sisters-in law, Frankie and Loania Burns; and one son-in-law, Eddie “Tobe” Hartsell.

Survivors include her husband Don Beers of the home; one son, Jerry Wood and wife Kathy of Butler, Missouri; two daughters, Carolyn Hartsell of Joplin Missouri and Kathy Beers and partner Stephanie Mills of Belleville, Illinois; one daughter-in-law, Nancy Young of Hidden Valley Lake, California; one brother, Jim Burns and partner Shari Reed of Bella Vista, Arkansas; and two nephews, Jimmy Burns of Palm Springs, California and Rockey Burns and partner Robbin Gorman of Siloam Springs, Arkansas.

Jo was blessed with six grandchildren, Trent Wood of Middletown, California, Tara Mendez (deceased) of Santa Rosa, California, Sara Wood (Scott) of Hidden Valley Lake, California, Bethany Wood of Concord, California, Andrea Wood Baxter of Butler, Missouri and Michael Wood (Jennifer) of Holt’s Summit, Missouri. She also had ten great grandchildren.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Phoenix Home Care and Hospice for the care Jo received in the months before her death. A very special thank you to Brian Denmark and Brittany McHaffie for the loving care they gave to Jo whom they treated like family.

Ron Johnson

(From Brenner Mortuary)

Ronald Duane Johnson, 76, passed away unexpectedly on May 27, 2024 in Joplin, Missouri. He was born on August 20, 1947 in Pittsburg, Kansas to Eileen [Jones] and Everett Johnson.

Throughout childhood, Ron was known for his love of music, especially rock and roll. In the 1960s, Ron became the drummer with The Infernos, a local Pittsburg band that traveled around the region playing at multiple events and venues including the Tower Ballroom.

Ron graduated from Kansas State College (now Pittsburg State) in 1970 with a degree in Business Administration. In 1973, Ron married the great love of his life, Catherine Johnson, daughter of JoAnn [Merando] and Donald Johnson, also from Pittsburg. Together, they took on all of life’s adventures, from new jobs to new homes to parenthood.

Ron officially retired from a successful career in sales in 2019, when he began a new career in professional tinkering. You name the project, Ron did it. One custom birdhouse would easily turn into 30 as Ron’s love for others combined with his love for projects. Ron’s generosity knew no bounds, and he found great joy in giving of his time and his talents to others. His sense of humor was also limitless, as he relished dad jokes, gag gifts, and ugly sweaters at an annual Christmas party.

A lifelong drummer, Ron played with many bands including The Infernos, The Great Society, The Al Mac Trio, The Leavell Brothers, and The Bob Massey Project, and he has been recorded on multiple studio albums.

In 2015, The Infernos had two reunion albums where they reprised classic rock hits. Ron also had a passion for golf and would be seen often in a Saturday morning golf group. Ron and Cathy’s adventures continued into retirement, as they found so much joy in the company of those they loved most.

Trips to Michigan, Florida, and Texas with friends and family; monthly birthday celebrations; annual holiday celebrations, including a themed Christmas party with friends and golf-cart Christmas Eve caroling with family; and countless Friday lunches with “the boys” filled Ron with purpose and pride in those he loved.

He was particularly proud of his son, Brandon, who carried on his love for music. Brandon became a professional musician and music educator, which all started with drum lessons with Ron in the basement of their family home. Ron often said, “My son learned how to play the drums. I just learned how to beat on them.” Repairing drums, finding bargains, and “talking shop” in their shared interest was a favorite pastime for Ron and his son. He also taught others a love for drums and music, including long-time family friend, Doug Fuller.

To meet Ron was to know a life of true joy. He would turn a bad day happy by marching into the living room with a dance and a song. He would rattle off a beat to any tune on the radio, and any flat surface was likely to be used for tapping a rhythm. Not known for great attention during game time, he would notice a prolonged pause in dominoes and ask, “Is it my turn?” You were never in want of a smile and a laugh when Ron was around.

Ron leaves a legacy of laughter, love, and loyal friendship. Ron is survived by his wife, Cathy of Joplin; his son, Brandon (Rachel) Johnson of Lee’s Summit; his brother, Ken (Ilene) Johnson of Birmingham; brother-in-law Mike Johnson of Frontenac; brother-in-law Doug (Brenda) Johnson of Frontenac; and a family of life’s greatest friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eileen and Everett Johnson.

Visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 at Brenner Mortuary in Pittsburg on Saturday, June 15, 2024. A memorial service will follow at Brenner’s at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ron’s memory to either the Joplin Humane Society, in honor of the animals he so loved, or Band of Angels, which provides musical instruments to students in need. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762. Online condolences may be left at www.brennermortuary.com. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg, KS.
