Lawrence Richardson

(From Parker Mortuary)

Lawrence Dean Richardson, age 87, Joplin, entered into his heavenly home on Thursday, February 6, 2025 at The Arbors at Silver Creek Alzheimers Assisted Living.

Lawrence was born November 14, 1937 in Oswego, KS, son of the late Norman Dean and Grace Naoma (Ruble) Richardson. He graduated from Joplin High School in 1955. Lawrence was a talented pitcher in High School and led his team to a State Championship his senior year.

He married Kay Thompson on September 14, 1956 at Byers Avenue United Methodist Church. Together they were blessed with 63 years of memories until Kay’s passing on November 15, 2019.

Lawrence worked for Eagle Picher as the plant manager for many years. When he wasn’t working, Lawrence was raising cattle, bailing hay and tending to his apple orchards. Lawrence and Kay owned and operated the Apple House, the family business on their property, selling apples and packaged beef. He was a lifetime member of Byers Avenue United Methodist Church. He was involved in most every event the church held and helped teach Sunday School with Kay. He was a part of the Governor’s Mounted Guard drill team and performed at rodeos. He enjoyed taking road trips with Kay in their motorhome and hauling their horses along with them to take trail rides. He spent countless hours cheering on his children and grandchildren at their sporting events. Lawrence enjoyed his time with his family and never missed an opportunity to play some kickball at family gatherings.

In addition to his parents and wife, Lawrence was preceded in death by his sister, Erdene Gooch; brother-in-Law, Lloyd Gooch; granddaughter, Kara Richardson; and a son-in-law, Russell Beck.

Lawrence is survived by his four children, Debbie Vanwinkle and husband, Bob, Kathy Cowley and husband, Rick, Carol Hatfield and husband, Ronnie, and David Richardson and wife, Jeanne; nine grandchildren, Travis Beck and wife, Jamie, Tyler Beck, Taylor Beck and husband, Stetson, Savannah Allen, Trent Cowley, Andrew Jiles and wife, Kayli, Ethan Hatfield, Lucas Hatfield, and Klayton Richardson and wife, Michaela; 20 great-grandchildren and one more on the way; and one great-great-grandchild.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made out to Byers Avenue United Methodist Church.
