Robert Lilburn Luney, 84, of LeRoy, Kansas, passed away early Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at the Coffey County Hospital in Burlington.
Bob was born June 20, 1933, in Pierce City, Missouri, the son of Lilburn Wright and Juanita (Booton) Luney.
When he was a freshman in high school the family moved to LeRoy where Bob would spend the rest of his life. He graduated from LeRoy High School in 1951.
He served two years in the U.S. Army and then served with the Kansas National Guard.
He worked with his dad at Luney’s Garage, was a janitor and bus driver for USD 245, worked for Sutherland Farm Equipment, was parts manager at Caldwell Implement; and was a janitor for USD #244.
On November 27, 1955, he and Frances Viola Williams were married at the Christian Church in LeRoy. They became the parents of two sons.
Bob was a member of Congdon-Kepler Post #38, American Legion in Burlington, Neosho Lodge #27, A.F. & A.M., the Odd Fellows Lodge, and was a volunteer firefighter with Coffey County Fire District #1 for 67 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charles E. “Sonny” Luney.
He leaves Viola, his wife of more than 62 years; his sons, James Luney and wife Donna, LeRoy, and Charles Luney and wife Kathy, Wichita; 5 grandchildren, Ashley Gerlach and husband Matt, Clearwater, KS, Kelsie Matta and husband Adrian, Wichita, Mallory and Marissa Luney, LeRoy, and Sydney Luney, Wichita; two great-grandchildren, Gracie and Gabe Gerlach; two sisters, Jeanine Harvey, Topeka, and Naomi Barchak, Joplin, MO; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 P.M. Friday, January 5, 2018, at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. Burial will follow in Logue Cemetery east of Leroy.
The family will meet with friends from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Coffey County Cancer Support Group and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
