(From Parker Mortuary)Rose Monica Johnston, age 89 of Joplin, Missouri, a beacon of selfless love and spirited kindness, was called to her heavenly home on January 1, 2026, after a brief illness. Born on June 24, 1936, in Selden, Kansas, to the late, August and Frances Steiner Moeder, Rose blossomed into a woman of unwavering faith and boundless friendliness that touched the lives of all who knew her.
For over two decades, Rose enriched the lives of countless students and staff as a cherished member of the Joplin R-8 School District. Rose's life was a testament to her Catholic values, which she lived out every day through her actions and interactions with others. She was a dedicated member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Joplin, having previously been an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Her commitment to her faith was evident in her involvement with the Parish Council of Catholic Women and her volunteer work with St. Vincent de Paul, where she served those in need with a generous heart.
Rose's family was the cornerstone of her life. Her marriage to the late Bob Dean Johnston on October 5, 1953 was a partnership filled with joy, respect, and mutual support, he passed away in 2018. Together, they raised a family that included their daughter Cindy Maggard and her husband William, their sons Michael and Brian Johnston along with his wife Beverly, and their late son Gregory Johnston. Rose was the proud grandmother to 11 grandchildren, the cherished great-grandmother to 25 great-grandchildren, and the adored great-great-grandmother to one great-great-grandson. Each of these individuals was a precious jewel in the crown of her life, and she nurtured them with love, wisdom, and the occasional humorous tale.
Funeral mass will take place on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Joplin, burial to follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 6, 2026 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Parker Mortuary.
