John Rains

(From Parker Mortuary)

John L. Rains, 85, Joplin, passed away on May 28, 2026, in Joplin, Missouri. He was born on October 30, 1940, in Cleburne, Texas, to the late W.L. and Imogene (Shelton) Rains.

He spent more than 30 years working at Atlas Powder/ICI, where he earned the respect of his coworkers through his dedication, reliability, and willingness to help wherever he was needed. He took pride in organizing company picnics for Atlas and loved to see his coworkers enjoying themselves.

In addition to his long career, John served in the marine reserves, demonstrating his sense of duty and his willingness to contribute to something greater than himself. That spirit of service remained a constant throughout his life and was evident in the many ways he stayed involved in civic and community activities. He was a longtime member of the Elks Lodge and the Shriners for more than 50 years, associations that gave him opportunities to build friendships, support worthwhile causes, and enjoy fellowship. He also served for many years as a referee for high school football, with his son, Mark, following in his footsteps.

John was also a familiar and welcoming presence at the Joplin Senior Center, where he enjoyed spending time with others while exercising, sharing both meals and robust conversations and being part of the life of the center. He brought energy and good humor to the community.

He will be remembered for his role as Santa in the Joplin Christmas parade and the railroad Christmas train from Rich Hill to Branson, stopping at each station along the way and helping create a special holiday experience for those who gathered to see it. John loved to see the smiles on children’s faces.

Those who knew John will remember him as a man who strongly loved his children, extended family and everyone he met. John loved people and people loved John. He also valued community, tradition, and service. His life was enriched by the many roles he filled, and he left a lasting impression on the people and organizations that were fortunate enough to know him.

John is survived by his daughter, Missy Rains of Joplin; daughter-in-law, Edwina Rains of Joplin; sister, Mary Jo Thompson of Texas; and long-time companion, Helen Hickman of Joplin.

Along with his parents, he is recently preceded in death by his son, Mark Rains, and his brother, Howard McCollough.

A visitation is planned for Friday, June 5, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. and a memorial service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel in Joplin, Mo. with Ted Easley officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joplin Senior Center in care of the mortuary.

Arrangements are under the direct care of Parker Mortuary in Joplin, MO.
