David Abernathy

David Leon Abernathy, 81, Neosho, died October 12, 2015 in Seneca House Nursing home, following a lengthy illness. 

David was born April 27, 1934 in Joplin, the son of Jasper R. and Agnes P. (Clark) Abernathy. He was a lifelong area resident and had served in the National Guard. He had worked at Missouri Steel and retired from the Neosho Public School system in May 1996, following 17 years of service. He enjoyed watching wildlife and playing with his grandchildren on his golf cart. He was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church. 

David married Dorothy (Cupp) Lewis on July 1, 1972 and she survives. He is also survived by six children, Linda Taylor of Diamond; Billy Lewis of Neosho; Judy Gilbert and husband, Jim of Seneca; Connie Sreaves and husband, Steve of Waynoka, OK; Donna Gilbert and husband, Jack of Seneca and Brenda Roller and husband, Tim of Neosho; son in law, Danny Booth of Granby; one brother, Donny Abernathy and wife, Nelda of Neosho; one sister, Yuovene Swaffer and husband, Laveer of Purdy; 16 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Penny Anne Booth; a sister, Wanda Marie Abernathy and son in law, Richard Taylor.
