David Lawrence Disney, age 86, of Golden City, Missouri, passed away Thursday, October 29, 2015 at Truman Healthcare Center where he had been a resident for the past three weeks. The Disney family is thankful for the wonderful care and compassion shown by the nursing home staff.
David was born April 14, 1929, at Laverne, Oklahoma, one of the three children of David and Charlotte (Roberts) Disney. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Iris; and his brother, Cecil.
As a small child growing up through the Dust Bowl Days, David remembered his mother wiping his eyes each morning as they would be caked shut with dirt. While playing outside with his brother, Cecil, a dust storm quickly blew up. They had to crawl home on their hands and knees and had trouble finding their house. Later the family moved to Princeton, Missouri where David, Cecil, and their sister, Iris, walked to see the movie, The Wolfman, and it was dark when they left the theater. David loved to tell about being so afraid that they ran all the way home.
The Disney family moved to Golden City to own and operate Disney Service Station. David began a 42 year career at Wholesale Supply (Meeks) in Lockwood and helped Cecil by working at the station every Saturday. David’s sister, Iris, became ill with rheumatoid arthritis just as he started working at Meeks. He used his paycheck to cover her nursing home bill every week until she passed away.
On September 8, 1961, at Lockwood, David married Sharron Lynn Taylor and they had shared nearly 46 years together before her passing on June 12, 2008.
Survivors include a son, Craig Alan (Sherry) Disney, Bloomfield, Missouri; a daughter, Kathryn Boehne, Golden City; two brothers-in-law, George Riley (Dixie) Taylor, Golden City, and Eldor Von Stroh, Republic, Missouri; six grandchildren, Summer Mahala (Bryan) Peters, Theodore Michael Boehne, Brittany Shane Martin, Taylor Brooke Disney, Deana Lynn Stevens, and Adrienne Faith Culp; and five great-grandchildren, Isaac Scott Stevens, Isabella Stevens, Mallory Faith Culp, Jackson Elliott Martin, and Anna Charlotte Peters.
David was a die-hard Kansas City Royals and Chiefs fan. He umpired Little League baseball games in Golden City for many years and was known to have major differences with opposing team’s fans. David raised a huge garden every year and shared his abundant harvest. He was a member of Golden City United Methodist Church. David’s life was characterized by love for his family, hard work and honesty, and his family considered him to be the best dad and grandfather ever.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Golden City with Pastor Lonnie Pennell officiating.
