(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)Jack Dickey age 82 passed away February 25, 2022.
Jack was born June 16, 1939 in Ft Scott, Kansas to Harvey Francis and Rita Josephine (Chamberlain) Dickey, the 6th of 9 children. Harvey sold produce, from his own stand and later Joplin City Market and often took Jack and his brothers all over the United States to purchase in season fruits and vegetables. These trips were a source of many fond and very entertaining memories.
The family moved to Joplin in 1954 where Jack attended Joplin High School. His sophomore year in high school, Jack met Janice Johnson in their homeroom class but he was too shy to ask her on a date. Eventually he did, and they married September 18, 1959.
Jack attended Moler Barber College in Kansas City and was a practicing barber in both Joplin and Kansas City. After Jack went to work for General Motors at the Leeds Assembly Plant in 1964, he and Janice settled in Independence, MO in 1967. He worked the assembly line and paint booth until the closure of the plant in 1988. Jack was very blessed to be able to fully retire at a young age in 1991.
Early retirement allowed Jack to enjoy spending time with his kids, their spouses, and his grandchildren. He was the best Dad and Papa-always ready to step in for school activities, doctor appointments, but most of all just for fun. His most treasured times were spent at the family cabin at Truman Lake fishing, hunting, and best of all, sitting by the fire pit swapping stories. Anyone who drove around the corner was always welcome to stop and enjoy the fire, a cup of coffee, and a laugh. In later years, the addition of great grandchildren brought Jack amazing joy, laughter, and a lot more fishing.
Jack truly loved time well spent with family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Janice, three children and their spouses- Jeff and Karen Dickey of Springfield, MO, Jody and Diana Dickey of Kansas City, KS, and Jennifer and Greg York of Wichita Falls, TX. Six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren~ Connor Dickey and Daniela Cleary of Richmond, CA, Grace Dickey of Belton, MO, Rian and Caleb Smythe and their boys Jude, Jonas, Abel, and Solomon Jack of Ozark, MO, Jordan and Cody Hamilton and their children Coralee, Wilder, and Magnolia of Highlandville, MO, Clary and Jake Girdner of Tucson, AZ and Molly and Jared Sanders of Weatherford, TX. One sister~ Katherine Funcannon of Joplin, MO and one brother and sister in law, Gary and Pat Dickey of Alamogordo, NM, and many, many well loved nephews and nieces.
