Jack Boyes

Jack Richard Boyes, age 91 of Galena, passed away at 4:45 PM on Sunday, March 5, 2023.

Jack passed from this life on the same piece of property that he was born on, the family farm north of Galena in Union Chapel. He was born on September 4, 1931 to Andrew "Scotty" M. Boyes and Eliza (Ritchie) Boyes. He graduated from Galena High School in the late 1940's and was a lifetime resident of Galena.

He and his family worked the farm for his entire life, but he also worked for Cherokee County driving the road grader from 1953-1978. It was at that time that the Kansas Governor appointed him to the position of Cherokee County Commissioner, a position that he held until the early 1990's. He also served on the Union Chapel School Board. For as long as his health allowed, he enjoyed hunting. 

He was a devoted family man who cherished his time with them, especially attending his grandkids sporting events, and was also an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. Jack was a member of First Baptist Church of Galena. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and was baptized on June 16, 2019 on the same day as two of his great-granddaughters, Madyson and Blakely.

Jack was united in marriage with Colleen (Swain) Boyes on July 17, 1950. She preceded him in death on February of 1992.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, Scotty and Eliza Boyes; and one son, David Boyes.

Survivors include one son, Darrell Boyes (wife, Darlene) of Galena; eight grandchildren, Justin Boyes (wife, Shanna) of Galena, Jarrett Boyes (wife, Jaime) of Galena, Melanie Rhinehart (husband, Brandon) of Edmond, OK, Marla England (husband, Dale) of Neosho, MO, Colby Boyes (wife, Shannon) of Carl Junction, MO, Davin Boyes (wife, Kelli) of Independence, MO, Andy Boyes (wife, Breanna) of Joplin, MO, and Jessica Hudson of Branson, MO; as well as numerous great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at Oak Hill Cemetery of Galena. Pastor Aaron Polok will officiate. Pallbearers serving will be Scott Boyes, Ethan Boyes, Austin Boyes, Andrew Boyes, Mike Thompson, and Steve Thompson, and Mike Gibson, with Shay Williamson and Shelby Jansen serving as honorary pallbearers.

Visitation will take place from 6-7:00 PM on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at Derfelt Funeral Home of Galena.
