(From Parker Mortuary)Oliver B. "OB" Carlson, a cherished husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2025, in Joplin, MO, at the age of 80. Born on February 6, 1945, in Lackawanna, NY, OB's life was marked by his unwavering kindness and the interesting tales from his colorful life that captivated all who knew him.
OB's journey led him to Tulsa, OK, where he married the love of his life, Sharon "Bivins" Carlson, on June 11, 1988. Their partnership was a testament to enduring love and mutual respect, creating a warm and inviting home for their children. OB was a devoted dad to Tracy Powell and Michael, of Carl Junction, MO; Kathy Rogers and her husband, Matt, of St. Louis, MO; Tracy Ann Carlson of Washington; Obie Carlson of Colorado; Tim Powell of Carl Junction, MO; David Powell and his wife, Alicia, of Dallas, TX; and Buddy Nicholson of Joplin, MO. Each of his children inherited his kind heart and passion for life's simple pleasures. One thing OB never failed to mention, was that not only would his children be able to share stories of his life, but he also was blessed to have 16 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren to continue those stories and fill in the parts his children left out.
OB's educational journey didn’t conclude with his graduation from high school, after which he embarked on a career that would become one of his most treasured topics of conversation. He worked on the railroad for over 40 years, dedicating his service to Burlington Northern and Watco Railroad, where his hard work and commitment were evident to all who worked alongside him. While working for Burlington Northern he attended classes in the evening and received a degree in business.
His service to his country was equally notable. OB served in the Army during the Vietnam War, where his bravery and leadership were recognized through his rank of Sergeant. His heroism was honored with several commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, and the Vietnam Service Medal. These accolades, while a source of pride, were never spoken of by OB.
In his free time, OB found joy in watching westerns and football, sharing these moments with family and friends. His stories of the railroad years never failed to entertain, as he could recall the smallest details and turn them into the most fascinating tales. OB's love for car rides was well known, as they were an opportunity for him to explore and share his adventures with those he loved.
As we bid farewell to Oliver B. Carlson, we celebrate a life well-lived, filled with stories, love, and the quiet strength of a man who faced life's challenges with courage and a smile. May he rest in peace, knowing that his memory will be treasured forever.
