(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)Cecilia Joyce Sherwood-May, age 80, of Joplin, Missouri, passed away on June 26, 2025, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin.
Joyce was born on August 8, 1944, in Joplin to William and Pearl Johnson. She spent most of her life in Joplin, with a brief time in Iowa during her childhood, growing up alongside her three siblings.
She married Nolan “Pepper” Sherwood and together they raised four children. After Pepper’s passing in December 1998, Joyce later remarried David May who preceded her in death in August 2023.
Joyce worked for many years as a beautician, known for her care and conversation. Following Pepper’s passing, she stepped into a new chapter by taking over the family business, Sherwood Cleaners, where she worked faithfully until her retirement.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands, Pepper and David; her son, James Sherwood; two brothers, Bruce and James Johnson; and her sister-in-law, Judy Johnson.
She is lovingly survived by her son Scott Sherwood of Joplin; daughters Kelli Newman and husband Jay of Joplin, and Stacey Sherwood of Arkansas; and honorary daughter Ramona Lannon of Grove, Oklahoma. She also leaves behind one sister, Margaret Johnson of University City, Missouri; sister-in-law Diana Johnson of Neosho, Missouri; grandchildren Stormi Newman, Jaxon Sherwood, C.J. Million, Zane Newman, Xander Sherwood, Amy Bonds Ragland, and Lacy West; numerous great-grandchildren; and a large extended family and many dear friends who will miss her presence deeply.
A graveside memorial service to celebrate Joyce’s life will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, July 10 at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.
