Penny Brown

Monota “Penny” Brown, aged 90, passed away on June 26 2025, in Joplin, Missouri. She was born on August 17, 1934, in California to the late Esther and Gordon Stone.

Penny spent her childhood surrounded by music and movement. As a young girl, she attended the famed Meglin’s Dance School shortly after Shirley Temple—a memory she carried with pride all her life. She married her first husband Doug, and together they had one daughter, Terre. In 1959, she married the love of her life, Richard “Dick” Brown. They built a life of laughter and dedication, raising their son Rich, and blending their family with stepchildren Carol, Mary, Charlie, and Ryan.

Penny worked for nearly a decade at the Colonial Chapel Mortuary in Bellflower, California, where her compassion and grace brought comfort to grieving families. In 1990, she began working for Los Angeles County, dedicating over ten years to public service. In 1983, she was honored with the title of Worthy Matron in the Eastern Star, reflecting her values of community, dignity, and service. 

A talented and tireless craftswoman, Penny was known for her exceptional skills in sewing and crochet, creating treasured heirlooms with her hands and heart. Her cooking was beloved by all who knew her, and her home was always a warm, welcoming place filled with good food, laughter, and love. She found joy in musicals, swimming, traveling, and spending time with her family. Though joyful and playful, Penny carried herself with a gentle, thoughtful reserve. She was the steady center of her family—the quiet matriarch who offered strength, love, and calm in every season of life.

Penny is survived by her sons Rich Brown, Charlie Brown, and her cherished grandchildren Tabitha Evanetich, Amanda Brown, Lisa Brown, William "Rocky" Brick, and Susan Morgan. She is also remembered by many extended family members and dear friends. 

She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Brown; her daughter Terre Brick; her stepchildren Carol Steere, Mary Tiffany, and Ryan Brown; her parents Esther and Gordon; and her brother, Gordon.

She has been cremated and will be laid to rest at Riverside Veterans Cemetery, where she will be reunited with her beloved husband and soulmate, Richard. “She led with grace, gave with love, and leaves behind a legacy stitched together with strength, kindness, and quiet joy.”
