John Steele

(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)

John Lee Steele, 67, beloved father and husband, went home to be with the Lord on September 21, 2022 after a sudden stroke. He was born in Joplin, Missouri to the late Clifford and Shirley Steele.

John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Linda, son Greg and wife Deanna, son Cliff, and brother David, many cousins, nephews and nieces, and 4 grandchildren.

John’s father Clifford served as both a Marine and soldier in the Army, then retired and worked for Pepsi making a home in Duenweg, Missouri.

John went to school in Joplin, Missouri and developed a relationship with his Lord Jesus Christ at an early age with help from his family, church and youth group.

John married his wife Linda at age 17. He joined the army in 1972, serving in Alaska, California, Texas, Missouri, Georgia, the Pacific, and in Europe. Their first son, Greg was born in Joplin, Missouri and their second son Cliff was born in Anchorage Alaska.

John began his Army career working in chemical and ammo supply, then switched to

Air Defense and served in Texas, Alaska, Europe and the Pacific. Additionally, he served as a NATO Missile System evaluator throughout Europe, Drill Sergeant, and an instructor for the Patriot missile system, at Fort Bliss, TX, where he retired as Master Sergeant.

John always had a passion for building, fixing and creating things. After leaving the military he worked as a master carpenter creating beautiful kitchens, furniture, cabinets, and several homes. John loved to build things for his family, friends and neighbors, as well as often volunteering his time to help those in need.

John was always helping people in need. He helped build and repair homes along the border and in Mexico as well as El Paso, TX and Missouri. When the devastating EF-5 tornado struck Joplin in 2011, John was on the streets immediately after it passed with multiple chainsaws helping cut people out of basements and homes where they were trapped. He then volunteered for weeks helping lead emergency recovery efforts in the city.

His greatest joys were his family whom he loved spending time with, woodworking and building, hunting, fishing, meeting and making friends, helping people, riding his motorcycle with the Christian Motorcycle Association and the Patriot Guard and his Savior Jesus Christ.

A service to celebrate his life will be held Thursday, September 29th at 10:00am at Mason-Woodard Mortuary Funeral Home in Duquesne, Missouri. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 28th from 6:00pm-7:00pm.
