(From Derfelt Funeral Home)Catherine Ruth Swaney, age 74, of Columbus, Kansas passed away suddenly at her home, on Saturday, July 5, 2025.
Cathy was born to the late William Henry and Mildred (Victory) Jones on Wednesdy, May 9, 1951, in Joplin, Missouri. She graduated from Riverton High School, and then went on to attend classes at Labette Community College.
During her life, she was employed in several different areas of work, but most recently worked for PBI Gordon, before her retirement. Catherine enjoyed quilting, and was a member of a Quilter’s Guild in Joplin, MO. She enjoyed the outdoors and was known for her love of animals. On the farm, Catherine raised birds and loved to work in the garden. She attended church at House of Prayer in Riverton, KS, and had been baptized years ago in Spring River. She loved God and her family dearly.
Cathy married Ronnie Shultz, and her three children were born from that union: Cindy, Justin, and Donnie. Following their divorce, Catherine was later united in marriage to Rodger Kerns Swaney in June of 2002. He survives, of the home.
In addition to her parents William and Mildred, Catherine was also preceded in death by one brother, Jerry Jones.
Surviving are her husband Rodger Kerns Swaney of Columbus, Kansas; daughter: Cindy Carrier of Baxter Springs, Kansas; two sons: Justin Shultz (wife Mashea) of Columbus, Kansas, and Donald “Donnie” Shultz (wife Jami) of Bethel, Minnesota; three step-daughters: Kara Fields of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Deven Ford (husband Paul) of Lee’s Summit, Kansas, and Micah Colgrove (husband Kelsey) of Overland Park, Kansas; ten grandchildren: Colton Carrier (wife Loren), Zoey Carrier, Tatum Shultz, Joshua Shultz, Hunter Shultz, Royael Shultz, Joshua Moore, Levi Moore, Avery Shultz, and Mason Shultz; great grandchildren, Isaac and Lilli Carrier other grandchildren: Jaden Fields, Luke Wilson, Jackson Ford, Paityn Ford, Cooper Ford William Colgrove, and Abigail Colgrove. brother: Tom Jones of Lampe, Missouri; sister Rosie Schramm of Riverton, Kansas.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home of Columbus, Kansas. The family will host a memorial service July 19, 2025 at 2:00 PM, at Riverton House of Prayer.
