Ruth Browning
(From Konantz Warden Funeral Home)
Ruth Marie "Nanny" Browning, 79, of Liberal, MO, passed away Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at Mercy Hospital Ft. Scott, KS after a short illness.
Ruth lost her husband in July of 1999 and her children had moved away. The laughter of children playing in the streets was also gone but the love for Ruth remained. Grandchildren were growing up and having children of there own. Family would come to visit and this time great-grandchildren would come with them.
Taking care of her home was never easy but now it was more difficult. Children helped how they could, mowing lawns, cleaning house, painting and doing chores that were hard for her to do. Ruth didn’t let anything stop her though, you could always see her out in the yard often riding the lawn mower even at 79 years old.
Ruth enjoyed fishing and could never go as often as she’d like. She looked forward to annual visits from her son because she knew they would go together. Sometimes they caught fish, sometimes they didn’t. But they always had a great time and enjoyed each other’s company.
Ruth lived by herself but she was never alone. Her little dog Neko kept her company and so did her brother Thomas. Ruth and her brother shared a love that only a brother and sister can share. But more than that, the last few years they shared morning coffee, frequent calls, and were there for each other.
Ruth learned to use the Internet to stay in touch with family and before long she had a Facebook Page of her own. She loved to read the posts of family members, liking each and every post and picture on their wall. She was quick to share an inspirational quote or picture and would tag you to make sure you knew she was thinking of you. Facebook was just the beginning. She joined an on-line group called iRover and before long she was friends with people from around the world. Ruth loved her on-line community and they loved her back. She was Nanny to some and Mama Ruth to a whole lot more.
Ruth touched much more than the lives of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She touched the lives of countless strangers that were family to her. She loved each and every one and they loved her too. How can a complete stranger who has never met Ruth love her? She made it easy - her love for them was unconditional just like it was for her family.
Our time with Ruth was a blessing and the memories we have of her a treasure to keep. I hope you share the gift of love she shared with you and tell your family and friends what a joy she truly was.
Ruth Browning will be missed, but never forgotten, and always loved.

Ruth Marie "Nanny" Browning, 79, of Liberal, MO, passed away Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at Mercy Hospital Ft. Scott, KS after a short illness.
Ruth was born June 6, 1936 in Joplin, MO to Robert and Treasure Alberta Settles Dickerson.
She married Richard "Dick" Browning February 25, 1956. She had lived in Liberal for the past 50 years. Ruth referred to herself as a domestic engineer, and spent most of her time outdoors, tending to her beautiful yard that had an abundance of flowers blooming in the springtime. The “out doors” was her natural habitat and she loved fishing. Ruth was a avid "Facebook" user and had friends from all over the world, she was known to send encouraging words to friends near and far and they were touched by her kindness, love and friendship. She is survived by one son, Robert "Max" Browning and his wife Susan of Severn, MD, and three daughters, Rosemary Thompson of Nevada, MO, Deanna Weber and Euleta Barger and husband Joseph of Liberal, MO. Ruth enjoyed her grandchildren who affectionately called her "Nanny", she is survived by her 8 grandchildren; Thomas, Charity, Joshua, Alyssa, Trisha, Tamelia, Jennifer and Joseph and 11 great-grandchildren; Madison, Leah, Megan, Seth, Brandon, Nathan, Jeremy, Shannen, McKenna, Tallon and Corey. She is also survived by her brother Faunt Thomas Dickerson; Liberal, MO and her sister Clora Teel; Trona, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Life Story
Ruth Marie Browning was born in Joplin Missouri on June 6th, 1936. Ruth spent her childhood years growing up on her parent’s farm with her brother Faunt Thomas Dickerson and her sister Clora Louise Teel. Times were tough growing up during the depression and I’m sure that’s one of the things that made Ruth such a strong woman.
Ruth married Richard Irwin Browning on February 25th, 1956. Ruth would go anywhere to support her husband and his employment with General Dynamics meant several relocations. Ruth and her family traveled to many states including Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, California, and Washington to name a few. Several years passed since Ruth first met Richard and their family had grown. Her last child was born in 1962 and the frequent moves stopped in 1966 when the Browning family moved to Liberal Missouri.
Liberal was a new beginning for the Browning family but Ruth was up for the challenge. Together, Ruth and her husband Richard could do most anything. They took a small four room shack and turned it into a home.
The sound of children playing in the street was one of the things that Ruth loved most and Hill street was a generous source of children’s laughter. Of course some of those children were her own and that made the sound even more of a joy for her to hear.
Ruth worked hard her entire life and so did her husband Richard. Richard had his own business servicing Air Conditioning and Refrigeration for the surrounding community while Ruth was busy in the garden, taking care of her house, and raising her children. Ruth was always busy doing something. When she wasn’t in the garden, she was processing the fruits of its produce, making clothes, quilts, and afghans for her family, always making sure that each of them had what they needed. Times were hard and money was tight, but they were never poor.
Despite Ruth’s busy schedule, she found time to be a Den Mother for a Liberal Cub Scout Pack, make egg noodles and pies for Ma Percy’s CafĂ©, and occasionally she got to squeeze in a little time to herself.
Ruth was an amazing woman but more than that, she was an amazing mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and “Nanny” to everyone, young and old alike. She was a caregiver for her dad’s brother Dennis Dickerson after he had a stroke, and others that needed her care. It was not uncommon to have one or more grandchildren living in the house and being raised during their parent’s absence or when they needed a place to stay. Ruth loved her family and her family loved her.

Doc Spiva
(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)
Howard “Doc” Stratton Spiva, 92, passed away on January 27, 2016 at Mercy Hospital Joplin, surrounded by family, following a brief battle with leukemia.
Doc was born on February 22, 1923 in Stella, MO to Thomas Everett Spiva and Ruby Lentz Spiva. He was one of 12 children.
Doc graduated from Stella High School in May of 1941 with a scholarship to Missouri State University, intending to pursue a baseball career. Instead, shortly after he turned 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Army to fight for his country in World War II. He began his military career with the Military Police but then became a combat engineer when he was sent to the Pacific Theatre. His primary mission was to build bridges allowing troops to safely advance. From 1942 to 1944, most of Doc’s time was spent in Australia, New Caledonia, and the Philippines. Despite receiving a gunshot wound to his hand, Doc taught himself to fire his weapon with his middle finger and returned to his regiment to continue to fight. Doc was one of the last to return from the war, having spent a total of 3 years, 3 months, and 27 days away from American soil. Upon returning to the United States, Doc joined the Army Reserves and continued to serve for 32 years, retiring as a Major.
When Doc returned from the war, he settled in Joplin. There, he met and married Norma Jean Key. They had three children: Tammeria (Dale) Hawks, Scott Spiva, and Matthew (Carolyne) Davis. He went to work at Vickers, where he worked for over 18 years. The remainder of his working career was spent as Sales Manager for 3M.
Doc has always been known in the community as a servant and leader, always ready to lend a helping hand. And he never forgot a face. He was involved in the Boys Club of Joplin, Joplin Optimist Club, Joplin Board of Adjustments, and was a lifetime member of the Stella United Methodist Church. Baseball was a lifetime passion and he was involved in organizing and coaching many baseball leagues for over 40 years. His leagues include the Mickey Mantle Baseball League, Joplin Babe Ruth League, and American Legion Baseball Post 13.
Over 30 years ago, Doc founded the Joplin Arthritis Foundation, now known as Home Medical Equipment Services, a non-profit United Way Agency. The organization provides medical equipment to people in the four-state area who are unable to afford it otherwise. Until his death, he served as President of the Board of Directors. In 2011, he was instrumental in raising donations for the victims of the Joplin Tornado, making sure veterans who came for help had food, clothing, and shelter.
Other than his family, one of Doc’s proudest achievements is the time he spent with Joplin’s Robert S. Thurman American Legion Post 13. He became Post Commander and, among other duties, was in charge of providing military honors for veterans’ funerals. He attended and participated in over 800 military funerals, ensuring that his fellow veterans were given the honors they earned serving their country. On Veterans Day 2011, Joplin Mayor Michael Woolston recognized Doc’s service by appointing him Grand Marshall of the 2011 Veterans Day Parade.

Barbara Myers
(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)
Barbara Louise Myers passed away at home, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, January 21, 2016, after a long battle with heart disease.
Barbara was born January 4, 1938, to Walter Ray and Ella Mae Smith Tomlinson in Joplin, MO. Her mother passed when Barbara was 18 months old and she was raised by her sister, Zelma Thomas. She attended Joplin High School, graduating in 1955. On August 18, 1956, she married Wilbur “Bud” Myers. He survives at home.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She and her husband were sealed for time and all eternity on August 26, 1958 in the Los Angeles, CA temple.
Barbara was preceded in death by a sister, Juanita Thomas and a brother, Roy Tomlinson. She is survived by her 4 children, Karen Myers Peternell (Mike) of Arma, KS; Susan Myers, Joplin, MO; Julie Myers West (Don) of Webb City, MO; and Brian Myers (Jennifer), of Joplin, MO. Other survivors include her 11 grandchildren – Rusty, Jeremy (Jordyn), Blake, Timmy, Cory, Trace, Shawn, Dillon, Angela, Brianna, and Beau, and 1 great-grandchild – Bryson; a sister, Zelma Thomas, and numerous cousins and other family.
In the early years of her marriage, she was a homemaker and stay-at-home mother. She later joined the work force as a sales clerk at Lynn’s Hallmark, an office worker for Dr. Dan Dagan, and municipal court clerk for the City of Webb City.
She was affectionately known by her grandchildren as Grandma Sweets because her cookie and candy jars were never empty. She loved to cook and bake; her specialty being anything involving chocolate. At Christmastime, she would order a 25-pound block of chocolate from a candy company in Salt Lake City, which she would chisel into pieces for candy making and distribution to family members.
With a gift and special flare for decorating, she was able to create a warm, loving environment in her home. She loved to decorate for the holidays and her favorite was Halloween. She went all out, with decorations and parties, looking forward with anticipation to the trick-or-treaters coming and loved seeing the kids’ costumes.
For several years at Christmas, she made gingerbread houses from scratch, having created her own pattern. These houses were even sold at Arts & Crafts shows in Joplin. They were works of art.
She was a talented seamstress. She made her children’s clothes and Halloween costumes. She made curtains, crafts, one-of-a-kind dresses for special occasions, Christmas stockings – making “what we can’t find, we’ll make” a reality.
Photo albums and scrapbooks were a project she took up after retirement. By the time she was finished, each child and grandchild had their own personalized history told in photographs.
The daily crossword puzzle in The Joplin Globe was a favorite pastime. She could easily spot 4-leaf clovers in a patch of clover. Anything she gift-wrapped looked like a professional had done it.
She was eloquent with words both written and spoken and had a flare for expressing thoughts and ideas. A logical thinker with a good sense of humor and just the right amount of sarcasm, Barbara was able to put her take on a situation that left you rolling on the floor laughing. Seinfeld, Carol Burnett, I Love Lucy, and All in the Family were some of her favorite TV shows.
Mother is the glue that holds the family together. Barbara was the center of her family, both the one she came from and the one she had. She loved unconditionally and had a way of making everyone feel special to her. Because they were.
A heartfelt thanks from the family to all who were involved in her clinical care – the nurses and physicians at Freeman Heart Center, and a special thanks to the angel nurses from Hospice Compassus.
