Lillian Diederich

Mrs. Lillian J. Diederich, 93, of Grandview, Missouri, formerly of Joplin, Missouri, departed this life on Monday, November 21, 2016, at the Beautiful Savior Care Center in Belton, Missouri, after a recent decline in health.


Lillian entered this life on April 16, 1923, in Morris, Oklahoma, one of five children born to the late John Harrison and Cora (Hull) Owen. She was raised and attended school in Carl Junction, Missouri. On December 28, 1941, she was united in marriage to Sylvester William “Bud” Diederich, whom she had only known for eight days, a marriage that would endure the next sixty-eight years. They resided in Kansas, California, Washington and Oregon before returning home to Joplin in 1955. Throughout her life she was a devoted homemaker and caregiver to the elderly. She volunteered at area nursing homes and for over twenty-five years she and Bud delivered Meals and Wheels to the area homebound. She had a great love for people and was always lending a hand to people in need. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Joplin and upon moving to Grandview she became an active member at Coronation of Our Lady Catholic Church.


She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant son, Terry; two sisters, Arlie Frizzell and Helen Spence; two brothers, Earl and John Owen; and a daughter in-law, Anita Diederich.


Lillian is survived by her son, Craig Diederich and wife, Becky, of Grandview, Missouri; six grandchildren and spouses, Renita Hale, Jacob Blume, Kurtis Blume, Jay Diederich, Christina Tompkins and Jessica Holden; eight great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family and friends.


Funeral Mass for Mrs. Diederich will be held on Monday, November 28, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Coronation of our Lady Catholic Church in Grandview, Missouri, Father Stephen Hansen officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday morning at the church beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the Rosary following visitation. Joplin services are scheduled on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, Deacon Mike Dennis officiating. Burial will follow at Carl Junction Cemetery. Family request donations in lieu of flowers be made to either the Legion of Mary Praesidium or St. Vincent De Paul Society and can be forwarded to Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin, Missouri. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of the Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary in Joplin, Missouri.
