Ruth Mattes

Ruth Ann Mattes, age 91, Joplin, passed away at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at Freeman Hospital after an illness.

Ruth was born April 7, 1925 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to the late George E. and Carolyn B. Gebhardt and was raised in Davenport, Iowa. She graduated from Davenport High School in 1943, enrolled in Mary Crest College for Women and received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1947. Following graduation, she moved to Joplin where she worked as a laboratory technician at the original St. John's Hospital.

Ruth was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church; St. John's Auxiliary; the Joplin Woman's Club and Twin Hills Golf and Country Club, where in her earlier years enjoyed golfing, playing bridge and was the oldest member of the BBB Supper Club.

She married David H. Mattes on August 2, 1952 in Dewitt, Iowa. He preceded her in death on October 3, 2009.

Survivors include her son, Chuck Mattes and his wife, Karen, Joplin; a daughter, Ellen Mattes, Tulsa; a brother, Paul E. Gebhardt and his wife, Phyllis, Longmont, Colorado; a grandson, David E. Mattes and his wife, Brittney; and a very special great grandson, Nolan David Mattes; seven nieces and nephews and their families and weekly dinner friends, Pat Harris and Dixie Smith.

Ruth was such a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She always had a smile on her face and a story to share with you. She will forever be in our hearts and we will miss her love and especially her apple pies!

The family would to thank Dr. Bernard Bettasso and Dr. Chris Black for the excellent care they gave Ruth.

A memorial service is planned for Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel with Dr. Doug Lawson officiating. Family will receive friends Monday at 5:30 until service time. Burial will take place at a later date at Mount Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Joplin Humane Society or to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, both in care of Parker Mortuary.
