Sallie Cheshire

A child approaches her busy Mother and asks “Whadda doing Mamma?” In a sweet, playful southern drawl she replies “I’m a makin’ fur to make kitten britches … do you want a pair?” This was just one of the funny little sayings Sallie would say just to keep you guessing.

Sallie Helena Phoebe Adams Cheshire was born in Aberdeen, Mississippi on February 23, 1929 and died November 1, 2018. Her parents were Thomas Peter Adams and Helena Mae (Gilnor) Adams. She had two older brothers, James and Robert. She dearly loved Jim as he became one of her best friends throughout her life.

As a young lady, she moved to Houston, Texas and finished her schooling and became a secretary. She lived with her half-sister, Mamma Sue, who was a parachute packer for the local air show. There was a certain daredevil parachutist named Clifton Clyde Cheshire that Mamma Sue packed for. Sallie had seen him jump in shows and was impressed. These two met in a dance hall, jitterbug danced and fell in love! They married May 7, 1951 and soon had five children. They grew tired of Houston’s city life and moved to a nice little farm in Milford, Missouri in 1969. They raised Angus cattle, hogs, chickens, and kept a huge garden. In 1975 her husband suddenly passed away and she eventually moved into Lamar and lived there until 2016. The last two years of her life were spent in Santa Fe, New Mexico where she lived with her daughter, who lovingly took care of her needs.

While she lived in Lamar, if you drove past her home, you would most likely see her outside happily working in her beautiful yard a ridin’ on her mower, plantin’ daffodils or putting in one more tomato plant. Another place you might find her was at Strong’s Corner Florist where she could arrange a lovely bouquet for you. Sallie’s southern hospitality always showed when she would say “Come on in and have a glass of strong sweet tea” (like knock your socks off strong). She would stuff you with home-cooking like shrimp n red rice and giant cream puffs which were some family faves. She loved playing games and it didn’t matter whether it was spoons, uno, chicken scratch or pinochle. She had a ball and played to win!

Though she never remarried, she found contentment and joy with her family.

One of her famous quotes was “So many people don’t appreciate the small things in life, I am not rich in money but in life.”

Sallie Cheshire will be missed by many and we were blessed to have had her in our lives.

Preceding her in death were her parents: Thomas Peter Adams and Helena Mae Jayne; brothers: James and Robert Adams; Husband: Clifton Cheshire Sr.; and a son Clifton Clyde Cheshire Jr.

Survivors include daughters: Ann Cheshire, Carolyn Stewart, Jewell Daniel, Tracy Cheshire; grandchildren: Brennon Cheshire, Cami Colaw, Nathaniel Cheshire, Benjamin Cheshire, Anton Cheshire, Rose Cheshire, Clyde Cheshire, Chaison Cheshire, Sean Stewart, Michael Stewart, Holly Daniel, Kelly Ritzman; great grandchildren: Christopher Cheshire, Elijah Cheshire, John Cheshire, Malachi Cheshire, Kaylee Cheshire, Kessia Cheshire, Travis Whitted, Dayton Whitted, Kaleb Whitted and Braylee Whitted.

Services will be 10:00 am, Saturday, November 10, 2018 at Daniel Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 9:00 am until service time.

Private family burial will be at St. James Cemetery.
