Carol Smythia

Carol Sue “Backerman” Smythia, 66, passed away at her home in Verona, MO on Friday, November 23, 2018. Carol was born November 22, 1952 in Joplin, Missouri to Herman Eugene and June “Davis” Backerman, Sr. She graduated from Jasper High School, Class of 1971.

Carol was a home health provider for Integrity Home Healthcare, a member of the Carthage VFW and a member of the Assembly of God in Miller, MO. She loved Facebook, and everyone knew her as Aunt Carol, Mom and Mama Carol.

Carol was united in marriage to Frank Smythia on February 17, 1994 at the Assembly of God in Miller, MO; he preceded her in death on July 13, 1998.
Carol is survived by two sons, Herbert Garner (Tashia) of Verona, MO and Marty J. Garner (Teresa) of Springfield, MO; one daughter, Rebecca Mason (Christopher) of Greenville, NC; two brothers, Gene Backerman (Becky) of Lamar and Jimmy Backerman (Pamela) of Joplin; three sisters, Judy Norton (Wally) of Lamar, Linda Cook (Ed) of Liberal and Judy Silkwood of Braymer, MO; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren; and loving sister-in-law, Ramona Edgman (Doug) and dear brother-in-law, Isaac Smythia (Terry), along with several nieces and nephews.

Carol was preceded in death by three brothers, Gary, Fred and Steve Simmons; and one sister, Druceilla Simmons.

Visitation and a service will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at Ulmer Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to help cover funeral costs. Checks should be made out to Herbert Garner in care of Ulmer Funeral Home.
