Dawna C. Wagner, 86, of Columbus and formerly of Chetopa, passed away at 11:43 p.m., Monday, March 8, 2021, at her home.
Dawna Clydene Ballard was born on May 9, 1934, to Thomas Milton and Prudence V. (Castle) Ballard in Chetopa. She grew up and attended school in Chetopa.
On September 9, 1950, she and Merwin M. “Wag” Wagner were united in marriage. The couple moved and made their home in California and while living there she operated a daycare for several years.
In 1978, the family returned to Chetopa, where she lived since. For 12 years, Dawna worked as the activity director at the Chetopa Manor. Throughout her life, Dawna’s most treasured “job” was being a full-time mother.
She was a member of Faith Victory Church in Chetopa. One of her favorite things was to listen to the Gaithers and other gospel music. She also enjoyed playing pitch. Dawna will be most remembered for her genuine kindness and her love for children.

Three daughters – Merrita Manar and her husband, Darrel, of Joplin, Missouri
Rebecca DoByns of Columbus, Kansas
Shawna Wagner of Joplin, Missouri
Six grandchildren
Four great-grandchildren
Two brothers – Richard Ballard of Palm Springs, California
Denny Ballard of Santee, California
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and one sister.
There will be a Memorial Service at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 19, 2021, at Faith Victory Church in Chetopa. Burial will take place at Oakhill Cemetery in Chetopa.
