Thelma Mae Koval, age 88, of Joplin, MO, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2026, at NHC HealthCare in Joplin.
Thelma was born on May 6, 1937, in Joplin, MO, to the union of Harry and Pearl (Oldfield) Bailey. After graduating from Joplin Senior High School in Joplin in 1955, she moved with her sister, Margie, to Los Angeles, CA and began working for Carpenter Paper, later known as Nationwide Papers. She retired from a long career as an office manager in 1995 and moved back to Joplin the same year.While in Los Angeles, she met the love of her life, Bill Koval. Together they were united in holy matrimony on August 19, 1961 in Los Angeles. They were blessed with 62 years of marriage before his passing on July 23, 2024. Thelma was the heart and soul of every gathering; known for her warm embrace and the joy she brought to family functions. Her laughter was infectious, and her presence could light up a room. She spent countless hours planting flowers and different plants, watching birds, gardening and canning different vegetables.
Thelma's caring nature was evident in the way she took care of others. She was a person who would go out of her way to ensure that those around her felt loved and supported. Her passion for helping others was also reflected in her active involvement in the Joplin Welcome Club, where she was a beloved and dedicated member. She approached every aspect of her life with a deep sense of compassion and empathy. Thelma's legacy is one of love and service, and she will be remembered for the countless lives she touched with her generous spirit.
In addition to her husband and parents, Thelma was preceded in death by six siblings, Harry Bailey, Bob Bailey, Helen Yust, Howard Bailey, George Bailey and Margie Bowman.

Thelma is survived by her two children, William “Bill” Koval Jr. and wife, Susan, of Diamond, MO and Lisa Dick and husband, Jeff, of Webb City, MO; six grandchildren, Dustin Dick and wife, Stephanie, Christopher Koval and wife, Shelby, Lesley Koval, Tyler Dick, Michaela Koval, and Kyle Dick; and four great-grandchildren, Brayden Dick, Oaklynn Dick, Zelda Dick, and Willa Jo Koval.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 16, 2026 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 16, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel with Chaplain Bruce Yelverton officiating. Interment to follow at Osborne Memorial Cemetery with Tyler Dick, Kyle Dick, Dustin Dick, Chris Koval, Kevin Wallace and Will Grant serving as pallbearers.
Funeral arrangements are under the special care and direction of Parker Mortuary.
