Mary “Phyllis” (McMasters) Bishop, 90, long-time resident of Lockwood, Missouri, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 19, 2018, at the Good Shepherd Community Care and Rehab in Lockwood. She was a member of the Lockwood United Methodist Church.
Phyllis was the fourteenth of sixteen children born to James Harvey and Mary Elizabeth “Mollie” (Montgomery) McMasters in rural Dade County, Missouri, on July 16, 1927.
She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Mollie McMasters; her husband, Eldon Bishop; one son, David Bishop; one daughter, Aileen Bishop; one grandson, Tony Ott; ten brothers, Wallace, Lee, James Harvey, Jr., Horace, Benton, Charlie, Joe, Elvin, Elwood, and Ferrell McMasters; and four sisters, Levina “Lorene” McMasters, Reba Carmack, Bessie Wheeler, and Geneva Stanley.
Phyllis is survived by one brother, Clyde McMasters, Dadeville; one son, Dale Bishop and wife Lisa, Springfield; three daughters, Stephanie Plasmyer Obert and husband Fred, Lockwood, Janet Bishop Chambers and husband Pat, Carthage, and Sue Bishop McDonald and husband Jim, Kansas City; nine grandchildren, Tim Ott, Mike Bishop, Lori Bishop Bowles, Scott Obert, Stacey Obert Dutil, Eric McDonald, Adam McDonald, Sarah Bishop Brotherton, and Whitney Bishop Peddicord; nineteen great-grandchildren; and seventeen great-great-grandchildren.
She was an active member of the Lockwood Lion’s Club, the Lockwood United Methodist Women, and the Roy E. Carr Women’s American Legion Auxiliary in Lockwood.
Phyllis enjoyed a long career in the food industry, working as a food service supervisor at Good Shepherd Nursing Home for many years and in area restaurants. She loved cooking and baking, and made cakes for all occasions, including beautiful wedding cakes. Phyllis also baked pies, cookies, and much more for everyone who called on her. She was very creative, and enjoyed designing and making quilts, teddy bears, and other craft projects for her family and friends. Phyllis had a big heart, and was always ready with a helping hand and food for any and all occasions, especially hosting a good music party on the patio or a dinner for family, which the family always referred to as “cook-ups.”
She had a pretty singing voice and loved to sing hymns, as well as gospel and country music. Phyllis loved it when her brothers got together to “make music” and would often host them on her back deck. She also surprised the folks at the nursing home because she never needed a hymnal to sing at church, she knew all the verses by heart.
Nana loved her family, enjoying the visits and activities of her children and grandchildren as long as she could. She loved creating their birthday cakes and attending their parties and just watching them grow up.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 27, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lockwood United Methodist Church. Pastors Travis James and Roger McKee will officiate. Visitation will be held prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lockwood United Methodist Church or to the Good Shepherd Community Care and Rehab Memorial Fund.
