Joseph J. Verhaar, age 77 passed away on Saturday March 7, 2015, at his home, following an illness.
Joe was born on December 30, 1937 in Rotterdam, Holland. He came to the US in October of 1961 with his mother and younger sister Cora, to live with his sister Janie and her family. He married Sue Yarbrough on March 31, 1963. Together they made their home in Joplin. He became a citizen of the United States on March 7, 1978. Joe worked for Newman’s Department Store for many years. He then worked as a self-employed appliance repairman for over forty years. He was a member of the Joplin Elk’s Club for twenty-three years. He volunteered for years at the Elk’s Club Christmas Basket Program. He also drove the bus several years for the Blind Association.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-one years Sue Verhaar, Joplin; their son, Joe Verhaar, Jr. and wife Kathy, Joplin; one grandson, Joey Verhaar and fiancé Emily, Joplin; two sisters, Janie Naaykens and husband Frank, Joplin, and Cora Dukes and husband Denny, Carl Jct., Mo.; sister-in-law, Wynona Warden and husband Fred, Joplin; brother-in-law, Glen Yarbrough and wife Karen, Joplin; and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Mason-Woodard Chapel. Fred Warden will officiate. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to the Joplin Service Club for the Blind or the Elk’s Club Christmas Basket Program.
Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.
