Marie Young, age 93, of Lamar, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at Truman Healthcare Center.
Marie was born August 4, 1921, at Stoutland, Missouri, to John H. and Nola (Moore) Miller. At the death of her mother, she was raised in the home of her father’s twin sister, Victoria (Tody) and Harry Monday. After graduating from Stoutland High School, she earned a degree in music education from Springfield Teachers College. On May 24, 1946, at Stoutland, Marie married the love of her life, Wayne Young, a fellow teacher who shared her interest in education and genuine concern for students. Marie taught music in the Tunas, Richland, Ashland, Stoutland and Liberal school districts, finishing her career in Lamar Elementary School after teaching more than 35 years. Marie was a member of Missouri Retired Teachers and was a past worthy matron of Order of Eastern Star. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Lamar.
Wayne and Marie had shared nearly 63 years of marriage before he passed away April 28, 2009. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Artie Rothford and William Denzil Miller; four half-brothers, Harold, Hycel, Jim, and Russell Miller; two half-sisters, Wanda Howard and Willene Snoderly.
Survivors include two half-brothers, Buddie Eugene and Paul Francis Miller of Stoutland; two half-sisters, Doris Smith and her husband Elliott of Stoutland, and Faye Ross of Brea, California; numerous nephews and nieces; and many dear friends, including her caregiver, Martha Gardner and Rick and Denise Williams all of Lamar.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 8th at Daniel Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until service time Sunday. A committal service will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 10th at Missouri Veterans Cemetery near Springfield, Missouri.
Contributions are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or L.I.F.E. Foundation (to be used for Lamar school music program) in care of the funeral home.
