Betty VanWinkle

Betty Jean VanWinkle, age 91 of Joplin, Mo. passed away early Friday, July 24, 2015 at the Communities of Wildwood following an illness.

Betty was born on May 8, 1924 in Baxter Springs, Ks., the daughter of Arthur and Madeline (Cupp) Howard. She has been a lifetime area resident, Betty attended the Reinmiller School, walking 2 miles there and 2 miles back every day. She graduated from Duenweg High School and later the Joplin Business College. Betty worked for the Board of Education as the secretary to Superintendent Roi S. Woods, before retiring in 1954. She was a member of Christ Church of Joplin. Betty traveled with her husband, Bill, throughout the western United States and parts of Canada, often by motorcycle. They always camped, enjoying nature to its fullest, not once staying in a motel. Betty was definitely an outdoors girl.

She married Bill VanWinkle on December 25, 1947 in Joplin, he survives. Additional survivors include one sister; Carlene Ewing of Joplin and many loving nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her parents and by her sister, Rema Graff.

Graveside services have been scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2015 at Forest Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.
