Roberta C. “Bobbie” Swingle, 84, Carthage, MO, passed away Thursday, July 17, 2015 at National Health Care in Joplin, MO. Roberta Colleen Rutherford was born April 27, 1931 in Carthage, MO, the daughter of the late Mabel Rutherford and Robert Rutherford. She graduated from Carthage High School in 1949. She attended church at First Baptist in Carthage, MO and was a member of Fairview Christian Church in Carthage.
Survivors include one son; Donald L. (Kathleen) Swingle, Jr., Pittsburg, PA; three grandchildren, Kimberly Eugenia (Jason) Swingle, San Diego, CA, Zachary Swingle, Pittsburg, PA and John (Linda) Swingle, Kingwood, TX; three great grandchildren, Ace and Logan Swingle, Kingwood, TX and Liam Swingle, San Diego, CA; two brothers, Doyle Rutherford, Carthage and COL. Terry (Nancy) Stephenson, Williamsburg, VA; Bobbie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Donald, a son, Mark Steven Swingle, a great granddaughter, Kelley Nicole Swingle.
Bobbie’s mission was caring for children and it gave her a joyous sense of services. She worked in the First Baptist Church nursery in Carthage, followed by many other churches within the tri-state area. Bobbie continued providing care for children in a variety of locations after moving to Texas, with the last being the Temple Baptist Church, Baytown, TX, where she was also the church organist.
From a young age to the end, she was a beloved care giver. When not working with children, her focus was on providing support and care to the elderly. Bobbie did this mission also in a variety of locations, most notably, at St. Luke’s Nursing Home, Carthage, MO. She started the Evergreen Chapel, Grand Lake, OK, and was a volunteer at the YMCA in Kingwood, TX. Once again Bobbie applied her musical talents and served as the organist for the ministry. Friends and family mourn her passing but cherish the life she lived.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 – 7:00 PM, Monday, July 20 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, July 21 in the Knell Mortuary Chapel. Minister Jim Taylor, Fairview Christian Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Carthage. Memorial gifts are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or the Arthritis Foundation in care of Knell Mortuary, 308 W. Chestnut, Carthage, MO, 64836.
