Oscar VanWinkle

Oscar Allen VanWinkle, 86, Neosho, passed away at Mercy Hospital, Joplin on August 28, 2017. 

Oscar was born May 1, 1931 in Berryville, AR to Oliver Edgar and Lora (McCully) VanWinkle. His parents were farmers, and Oscar worked on their farm until 1948 when they moved to Idaho. After living in Idaho for a year, he relocated to Kansas. Oscar was drafted in 1952 and spent two years in the Army, serving in Korea and Japan. 

In 1956, Oscar married Peggy Byers and they had 61 wonderful years together. To this union, three wonderful children were born: Brenda Brown, Gary VanWinkle, and Phillip VanWinkle. Oscar worked at Pet Milk Company and was a custodian for the Neosho School system. He was always a helper and loved the Lord. He was a member of Abundant Life Assembly of God, and loved to work in the church, where he wore many hats through the years, including bus driver, custodian, carpet cleaner, maintenance, and door greeter. He also loved fishing and attending music shows in Branson. 

Oscar is survived by his wife, Peggy, two sons, Gary, and wife Mindy, and Phillip, son in law, Chris Brown, five grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a host of nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Orville, Clifford, and Kenneth, two sisters, Lucille and Retha, and a daughter, Brenda Brown.

Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1 at Clark Funeral Home in Neosho. Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at the Abundant Life Assembly of God in Neosho with the Rev. Ken Robinson officiating. Burial will follow at the Gibson Cemetery in Neosho, with Nathan VanWinkle, Josh VanWinkle, Brice VanWinkle, Eric Brown, Wayne VanWinkle, and Bob VanWinkle honoring their grandfather and uncle by serving as pallbearers. Contributions in memory of Oscar may be made to Abundant Life Assembly of God, c/o Clark Funeral Home, PO Box 66, Neosho, MO 64850.

Services are under the direction of Clark Funeral Home, Neosho, MO.
