(From Parker Mortuary)Ben Gilstrap, Sr, age 78, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of his family following an illness. He was an incredible husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose life was defined by service, faith, and unwavering devotion to those he loved.
He was born on May 31, 1947, in Macon, MO, to Berniece and Raymond Gilstrap. One of seven children, Ben spent much of his youth riding motorcycles, having fun, and occasionally causing a little trouble — a spirit of independence and adventure that stayed with him throughout his life.
On June 7, 1967, he married the love of his life, Diane, and together they shared 58 beautiful years of marriage. They built a family rooted in loyalty, strength, and commitment. He was a proud father to his two children: Ben Jr. and his wife, Carla, and Stacey and her husband, Brian. He was a deeply cherished Papa to his five grandchildren — Tera Miller and her husband, Bryan; Josh Gilstrap and his wife, Latricia; Chelsy Gilstrap; Harley and her husband, Leighton; and Bruce and his wife, Bailey — and to his thirteen great-grandchildren, all of whom were the greatest joys of his life.
Ben had a unique personality and strong convictions. He was passionate about politics, unafraid to voice his opinions, and always ready for a spirited discussion. While he wasn’t a man of flowery words or outward affection, the love he gave ran deep. He didn’t give his heart easily, but those he loved, he loved fiercely and without condition.
Ben’s hobbies changed over the years, but he always found joy in fishing, woodworking, and tinkering in the garage. He treasured every moment spent with his family, and they will cherish every memory, until they meet again.
A devoted Christian, he spent much of his working life protecting and caring for people as a police officer and detective, and later as a safety advisor for the State of Missouri. He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; one sister; and his son-in-law, Troy — whom we believe is fishing with him right now.
Ben leaves behind an enduring legacy of strength, conviction, and love. He will be remembered as the heart and backbone of his family, living on through the cherished memories, stories, lessons, and values he passed down to those who loved him. He will be missed more than words can express and remembered always.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
