(From Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home)Cheryl Kay Heckmaster (née Beck), age 81, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026, in Baxter Springs, Kansas. Born on October 8, 1944, in Independence, Missouri, Cheryl lived a life marked by dedication to her family, community service, and a deep appreciation for history and heritage.
Cheryl was the daughter of Genevieve Wilcox and Onan Beck. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Cleo Heckmaster; her brothers Warren and Onie Beck; daughter-in-law Jennifer Shaffer; grandson Alexander Cox; and great-grandson Malaki Montgomery.
A devoted mother, Cheryl is lovingly remembered by her children: daughter Jenny Grimsley and husband Keith; son Bob Shaffer and his significant other Karen; daughter Edith Saunders and husband Ron; and daughters Ronda Cox and Becky Bell. Her legacy continues through numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to her life.
Cheryl's commitment to service was evident throughout her life. She served as a Girl Scout Leader for the Ozark Area Girl Scouts, where she helped guide and inspire young girls through leadership and community involvement. Her passion for genealogy led her to serve as both Vice President and President of the Joplin Genealogical Society, where she contributed to preserving local history and helping others discover their roots.
A woman of faith, Cheryl was a dedicated member of the Community of Christ church. Her spiritual life provided strength and guidance throughout her years.
Cheryl will be remembered as a loving mom, grandma, and great-grandma whose warmth touched all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those who mourn her passing.
