Michael Clyburn

Michael Lee Clyburn, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and educator, was called to his eternal home on January 17, 2026. Born on June 10, 1948, in San Francisco, California, Michael's journey through life was marked by his intelligence, faith, and gentle spirit. He passed away at his home suddenly in Galena, Kansas, leaving behind a legacy of love and service.

Michael was the beloved son of the late Charles Lee Clyburn and Billie Jane Montgomery Clyburn. He shared a life full of love and devotion with his wife, Carol (Harshman) Clyburn. Together, they raised their son, John-Reuben Clyburn, who, along with his wife Alison, gave Michael the joy of being a grandfather to Dolton Clyburn. Also, he adored being ‘dog dad’ to their dachshund, Rosie.








A man of deep Christian faith, Michael was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Baxter Springs, KS and St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Galena, KS, he also attended Park Hill Church of the Nazarene with his wife. His commitment to his faith was evident in every aspect of his life, guiding his actions and interactions with all who knew him.

Michael's educational journey began at Missouri Southern State College, where he earned a BS in Sociology and Psychology, followed by a BS in Education. His passion for learning and teaching led him to a fulfilling career in education, where he dedicated over 20 years to shaping young minds in Baxter Springs, KS, after having served in both the Galena and Riverton School districts.

From the tender age of 15, Michael worked for the Galena Supermarket, demonstrating a strong work ethic that would follow him throughout his life. His dedication to service extended beyond his professional career, as he served over 50 years with the Boy Scouts of America, instilling values of leadership and community in countless youths.

An avid aviation enthusiast, Michael's eyes would light up at the sight of airplanes, especially his favorite, the P-51D Mustang. His interests were a reflection of his multifaceted personality, combining his love for history, technology, and the thrill of flight.








Michael also contributed his time and talents as a member of the Knights of Columbus, furthering his commitment to charitable works and the principles of his faith. Those who knew Michael will remember him as a pillar of the community, a man who lived by example and touched the lives of many with his kindness and wisdom.

A Rosary service will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary in Joplin with visitation to follow. Funeral Mass will take place on Thursday, January 22, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church of Galena, Kansas with burial to follow at Lowell Cemetery in Lowell, Kansas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Gideon’s International, in care of the mortuary.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
