Wilma Roper

Wilma Esther Roper of Joplin, Missouri passed away December 2, 2019 following 105 years of life filled with hugs and kisses, lots of home-cooked meals and celebrations of everyday living.

Wilma was born September 23, 1914, in Reeds, Missouri, to Walter David and Linnet (Watson) Ferguson.

Wilma attended Reeds Public School in a two-room school house. She graduated from Carthage High School in 1932. Her extracurricular activities included piano lessons, tap dance lessons, elocution lessons and playing second violin in the Carthage High School Orchestra.








In Spring 1933 Wilma secured a teaching job at Erie School, a one-room school for a salary of $45 a month for the 1933-34 school year. Her employment was offered with the provision that she attend summer classes at Springfield Teachers College (now Missouri State University) and pass an eight-hour Teacher Certification Test administered at the Jasper County Court House in Carthage Missouri prior to the start of the fall classes in 1933.

Wilma met Gilbert Roper, the love of her life, at a yard party. The couple married November 12, 1933. They started their 68 years together by purchasing a span of mules and a milk cow and began farming and raising their children. They began share-crop farming on rented land and in 1941 purchased their first 100-acre farm for $3000 loaned to them by their veterinarian on the condition they put a well in on the property. The farming enterprise would eventually grow to include 900 acres. Partnerships in the Sarcoxie Bank and Triangle Motor Co. Inc. brought about a “move into town” …Sarcoxie…in 1950. In 1958 Gilbert and Wilma established Roper Pontiac Inc. in Joplin. Sharing a common love for travel, their adventures took them far and wide including most of the lower forty-eight states, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, much of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Panama and Russia.

Wilma was active in the First Presbyterian Church where she served as Sunday School teacher, President of the Women’s Association, Curtis Club and Circle member, Elder, and she helped start an effort to provide back-to-school clothes for children, a program that eventually evolved into Crosslines Ministries. She was also active in P.E.O., Chapter FI, Ladies of Kiwanis, Cherete Study Club, Woman’s Club and was an avid bridge player.

In addition to her parents, Wilma was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert, June8, 2001; a sister, Opal Young; brothers, Lonnie Ferguson and Harry Ferguson; daughter-in-law; Darlene Roper; sons-in-law, Larry Beard and Kenneth Steele and great-granddaughter, Stella Beard.

Wilma was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great and great-great grandmother. She was immensely loved, she will be profoundly missed and forever treasured by the eighty-six who survive her.

Wilma is survived by her five children, Hal Roper (Ruth) Joplin, MO., Phil Roper (Celeste) Ridgecrest, CA., Janice Steele, Joplin, MO., Joy O’Dell (Vern), North Ft Myers, FL., Sallie Beard, Joplin, MO.; thirteen grandchildren, Cindy Rice (Dennis), Tammy Brown (Rick), Terry Taylor (Mark), Randy Roper (Charlene), Misty Frost (Jack), Paul Roper, Jeff Roper (Stacy), Doug Steele, Brian Steele (Leigh), Kyle Steele, Cass Conrad (Jim Sailer), Meghan Klosterman (Shawn) and Andrew Beard (Marissa); twenty-seven great-grandchildren, Lydia Lawless, Aaron Rice(Beth), Dustin Brown (Hannah),Jason Brown (Kali), Nathan Brown (Holly), Grant Taylor (Emily), Logan Taylor (Paige), Andrea Thomas (Joe), Hallie Roper, Riley Roper, Madison Hamilton (Jake), Jovi Frost, Mackenzie Roper, Ainsley Roper, Sam Steele, Jennie Steele, Allie Steele, Morgan Steele, Connor Steele, Dillon Steele, Payton Steele, Henry Sailer, Camryn Klosterman, Norah Klosterman, Owen Beard, Elliott Beard, Mary Grace Beard; and eighteen great-great-grandchildren, Fenton Rice, Cardin Brown, Maclin Brown, Creed Brown, Knox Brown, Trace Brown, Brooks Brown, Ily Brown, Brody Brown, Aubrey Brown, Roudy Brown, Charleston Taylor, Sloan Taylor, Lincoln Thomas, Zoe Thomas, Talyn Steele, Lyla Steele and Mallory Steele.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church 509 South Pearl, Joplin, MO. Reverend Alex Wales and Reverend John Nipper will officiate. Internment will be at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery, Joplin MO.

The visitation will be from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church prior to the service. In Lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Missouri Southern Foundation in care of the mortuary.

Rhoda Raymond

Rhoda J. Raymond, age 78, of Joplin, passed away on November 30, 2019, at Joplin Gardens, following an illness.

Rhoda J. Raymond was born on November 6, 1941 in Granby, MO. Her parents were Clarence and Lottie (Martin) Burress. She had two older sisters, now deceased, Audrey Bilbrey and Imogene Kurtz. She graduated in 1959 from Granby High School.

She married Ronald L. Raymond on November 25, 1960 at the First Baptist Church in Granby. They have always resided in Joplin. They have two children; daughter, Autumn Suckow and husband David, Joplin; and son Ryan Raymond, Joplin. She was a loving and caring wife and mother.








Rhoda was a fine seamstress and made clothes and costumes for both of her children. The young family spent vacations camping in national and state parks, in many states from east to west coast. In later years she and Ron traveled to many foreign countries. Rhoda enjoyed cooking special big family meals for the holidays. Her great passion was dancing. She met Ron at a Rock-n-Roll dance in Joplin. When Zumba began, she really got into it and made many close friends. She danced with the creator of Zumba (Beto) several times. Rhoda was competitive. She and Ron did many Road Races in several states. She was dearly loved by her family and friends. We will miss her bright smile.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday at Mason-Woodard Chapel. Randy Wilson, Minister will officiate. There will be a private family burial. The visitation will be 6-7 p.m. Thursday at Mason-Woodard Chapel.

Shirley Humphreys

Shirley Ann Humphreys, age 87, of Joplin, went home to be with the Lord, on Saturday November 30, 2019, at Freeman West Hospital, following an illness.

Shirley was born on June 18, 1932 in Springfield, IL, the daughter of the late Arthur and Vera (Hutchison) Shaunce. She grew up in Springfield, IL, moving to Eagle Grove, IA, where she met Chuck, and together they crafted a lifelong marriage of sixty-six years.

Shirley’s life was devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and serving Christ. She moved to Joplin in May of 1988, moving here from Virginia Beach, VA. She was a member of College Heights Christian Church. She was a volunteer for Freeman Hospital. She and Chuck spent many happy winters in Texas. She was the last of her siblings to make it home.








Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Chuck Humphreys, Joplin; her children, Terry Humphreys (Gloria), Kathy Ebeling (Fred) and Ron Humphreys (Pam); ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; she would want you to know, plus one on the way!

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary Chapel. Randy Gariss and Rick Bushnell will officiate. Burial will follow the service at Ozark memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mortuary. The family has requested contributions be given to God’s Resort in care of the Mortuary.

Connie Paulson

Connie Jean Paulson, 58, of Anderson, Missouri, departed this life on Friday afternoon, November 29, 2019, at her home.

Connie entered this life on October 9, 1961 in Neosho, Missouri, born to Kenneth and Frances (Cooper) Sutton. On September 14, 1985, she was united in marriage to Andy Paulson and to this union one son was born. Connie had a heart of gold and was loved by all that knew her. She resided in Anderson, Missouri, and enjoyed spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her father Kenneth Sutton.








Connie is survived by her mother, Frances Sutton of Anderson; her husband, Andy Paulson of the home; her son, Dane Paulson and Felicia Rehfeldt of Anderson; one brother, Randy Sutton and wife, Suzanne, of Anderson; a sister, Cloetta Chism, of Lanagan, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, December 3, 2019 from 6-8:00 p.m. in the Anderson Chapel of the Ozark Funeral Homes.

Andrew Choate

Services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Round Grove Baptist Church for Andrew Brock Choate, 26, Lockwood, who died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2019, at Mercy Hospital in Joplin. Burial was in the Greenwood-Kistler Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Lockwood Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Survivors include his mother, Lisa Comer and husband Jess; his father, Donnie Choate and wife Brandy; two brothers, Aaron Choate and Dakota Choate; one stepsister, Mariah Harding; one sister-in-law, Emily Choate; one niece, Frances Choate; one nephew, Liam Harding-Stump; grandparents, Carl and Joyce Beerly and Rick and Brenda Harding and a host of aunts and uncles including Carla and Kevin Sears, Pam and Jeff Hull, Donna and Randy Oglesby, Brant Beerly and Grant Beerly and cousins, Jerad and Kathy Sears, Drew and Kayla Warren, Brandon and Nichole Ogden, Jordan and Danielle Hull and Dillan Oglesby. 

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Bea Choate; his grandfather, Harlan Choate and an aunt, April Harding-Hurd. 

Mr. Choate was born May 20, 1993, to Donnie Choate and Lisa (Beerly) Comer. He was a 2011 graduate of Lockwood High School and attended Missouri Southern State University. He was a member of the Round Grove Baptist Church.

Susie Irwin

Susie Bell Irwin, Granby, MO went to her heavenly home on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at the age of 90 years, nine months, and ten days.

Susie was born February 20, 1929 in Exeter, MO to Charley and Lydia (Morris) Stewart. She was a longtime resident of Granby. Susie was a member of First Church of God, Granby, MO. She loved to go fishing, enjoyed hootenannies, and especially loved being with her family. 

Susie married James Leonard Irwin on December 21, 1949; he preceded her in death on June 17, 1978. 








She is survived by one son, Ray Irwin and wife, Lillie; four grandsons, David Lee Stuart of Stark City, James Kelly Stuart of Stark City, Leonard Lee Irwin of Monett, and James Lee Irwin of Bronough; several great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her husband, Susie was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Linda Sue Stuart; six brothers; and two sisters.

Services will be 10 am, Friday, December 6, 2019 at Clark Funeral Home, Granby Chapel, Granby, MO with Pastor Jim Stuart officiating. Interment will follow at Granby Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive visitors on Thursday, December 5 from 5:00 pm until 6:00 pm at Clark Funeral Home, Granby, MO.

Terrie Enochs

Terrie Lynn Enochs, 60, of Webb City, Missouri, passed away Tuesday morning, November 26, 2019, at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.

Terrie was born on September 6, 1959, in Webb City, Missouri, to the union of Everett and Freida (Browning) Johnson. She worked in the retail industry as a manager at Dollar General. On March 8, 1977, Terrie was united in marriage to Richard Michael “Mike” Enochs and together they had three children. She will be remembered as a loving wife, a devoted mother and a caring grandmother.

Terrie was preceded in death by her mother, Freida Johnson; and her grandson, Bradley Thornburg.








Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Mike Enochs, of Webb City; her three children, Jason Enochs of Webb City, Tammy Greninger and husband, Allan, of Webb City, and Kristy Enochs of Alba, Missouri; two granddaughters, Shyanne Thornburg and Shayla Riner; her father, Everett Johnson, of Webb City; three siblings, Richard Johnson of Webb City, Missouri, Steve Johnson of Springfield, Missouri, and Debbie Southard of Oronogo, Missouri; as well as a host of extended family and friends.

Funeral services for Terrie will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 4, 2019, in the chapel of Parker Mortuary in Joplin, Missouri, with Greg Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin. The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the mortuary.
