Lorene Jane Kester, age 91, formerly of Joplin, passed away at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at Grace Living Center, Jenks, Oklahoma.
Lorene was born January 5, 1926 in Carthage, Missouri to the late Claude A. Abram and Hazel A. Hout Abram. She worked as a printer in Corpus Christi, Texas at the Caller-Times and retired in 1988 after serving over twenty six years at the Joplin Globe. Lorene had also worked at Western Union Telegraph Company in Kansas, Colorado and Missouri. She enjoyed bowling, reading and working as church librarian for 3 different churches. Lorene worked several years with Missouri Southern State University, producing senior programming and was secretary-treasurer of the Prestige Senior Bowling League. Lorene was a faithful member of Eastview Baptist Church, Joplin. Before moving to Jenks, she resided at College View Manor in Joplin, where she enjoyed many friendships and afternoon card games.
She was the Worthy Matron of Eastern Star in Joplin and was a volunteer for Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Lorene enjoyed crocheting baby blankets, oil painting and traveling with great friends and family.
Lorene was an avid KU Basketball fan and was the first female allowed in the KU Press Box, reporting on the game via Western Union teletype. She also enjoyed the St. Louis Cardinals and watching football.
Lorene married R. Wayne Kester on May 17, 1985 in Joplin. He preceded her in death on December 16, 1999.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Parker and husband, Rev. Jerry, Tulsa, Oklahoma; two stepsons, Gary Kester and wife, Denice, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Greg Kester, and wife, Charlyn, Carthage; two brothers, Max Abram, Rockledge, Florida, Wilbert Abram, and wife, Janet, Lee's Summit, Missouri; grandchildren, Casey Kester Mabe and husband, Andy, Nick Kester, Lindsey Kester Hodges and husband, Jason, Hailey Kester; great grandchildren, Sean, Ryan and Jake Mabe and Grayson and Landry Hodges; nieces, nephews and other extended family.
Services are planned for Monday, July 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel with visitation from 1:00 p.m. up to service time. Dr. Tim Sumners and Rev. Jerry Parker will officiate.
A private internment will take place at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Gideon's International or Samaritans Purse, both in care of the mortuary.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
