George Maddox

George Edward Maddox, 80, of Goodman, Missouri, passed away on October 14, 2017. George was born on December 10, 1936 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Gomer and Patricia Maddox. The family later moved to Goodman. George enlisted in the Navy after high school and served his country for 20 years. On July 12, 1959, he married Marilyn (Howard) Maddox of Goodman.

While in the Navy, George served on submarines, destroyers, aircraft carriers and was stationed at military bases around the world, including Japan, the Phillippines, Scotland, Hawaii and many other bases in the United States. As a result, he and Marilyn were able to travel extensively, which they thoroughly enjoyed.

After his retirement from the Navy, George and Marilyn returned to Goodman. George started Maddox Electric, which eventually became Checkmate Security. He also worked with Marilyn at Maddox Real Estate.

George had the ability to build or fix nearly anything. He always had a passion for knowledge and immersed himself in learning all he could about subjects of interest, including astronomy, ham radios and most importantly, the study of religion.

George was a Christian and his faith was very important to him. He studied Christianity and other religions. He and Marilyn hosted weekly Bible study groups in their home for many years. They particularly cherished their travels to Israel and the Holy Land.

George is preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn, who passed in August of 2016, his parents and a sister, Myrna Bishop. He is survived by his daughter, Carol Waggoner and husband, Rob; Delbert and Jana Cravens, who kindly brought him into their family after Marilyn’s death, many nieces and nephews and Rocky, his beloved, Corgi.

Graveside services with full military honors will be held Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 10:00 am. at the Howard Cemetery, Goodman. Pastor David Munoz will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the First Christian Church of Anderson, c/o Clark Funeral Home, PO Box 66; Neosho, MO 64850.
