Melba Heaton

Melba Marie Heaton, 93 of Lamar, Missouri passed away Thursday, February 7, 2019 at Truman Health Care. She was born July 1, 1925 in Dongola, Illinois to Malby and Henrietta (Devault) Eddleman. She was a 1943 graduate from Dongola High School. Melba worked at McDonald Douglas in St. Louis during WW II. She attended the University of Missouri in Columbia. Melba was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Jasper until her health declined. She then moved to Lamar, Missouri.

Melba was united in marriage to Donald Heaton on June 3, 1947 at Columbia, Missouri. He preceded her in death on September 5, 2006. She worked until he finished college. In 1949 they moved to Newtonia, Missouri where he taught Vocational Agriculture, she was a homemaker and returned to college. In 1963 they moved to Jasper, Missouri. Melba taught elementary school in Avilla, Diamond and Jasper until 1985. She then worked part time jobs, cooking at the nursing home, working at the fire station, assisting with the bloodmobile, and selling Fuller Brush products. She was always very supportive and helped with her husband’s activities and interests. Melba helped manage the family cattle farm for over 40 years. 

Survivors include her three children, Barbara Jumper of Pacific, MO., Ed (Vonna) Heaton of Rockville, Maryland, and Patty (Wayne) Johnston of Lamar, MO.. Four grandchildren, Thresa (Ken) Benney, Brenda Jumper, Tony Heaton, and Dr. Sarah Heaton. Six great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, John Eddleman and Frank Eddleman, two sisters, Mary Alice Schloeman and Lodema McCommons, a son-in-law, Darrel Jumper, and a great-great-grandson.






Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Weng Funeral Chapel, Jasper, MO.. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at Weng Funeral Chapel, Jasper, MO.. Burial will be in Paradise Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church of Jasper or the Gideons.
