David Word

(From Parker Mortuary)

David Lee Word, 69, of Joplin, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 23, 2023. Born on April 25, 1954, to the late Chester “Chet” and Glorietta “Joyce” (Harris) Word, David was an integral part of the Joplin community.

Inheriting his mother’s artistic ability, David found his own canvas in music. This passion found him traversing the country at a young age to play music with his friends and band mates.

Although he mainly expressed his talents on the drums and vocals, he loved writing songs, and played many different instruments. He wrote and recorded many tracks in his home studio that he cherished. His most memorable years were with the band Sassafras, alongside Johnny Williams and George Oberley. His music and friendships left a lasting impression on the community.

Beyond his musical journey, David also carried on his family's professional legacy. Like his father, Chet, David ran the family car dealership on West 7th Street in Joplin. First Chet Word Motors and later, building his own business, Wheels-4-U, turning both into essential parts of the Joplin community.

David was a family man through and through. As a young father, he enjoyed taking his family fishing, going on camping trips at Roaring River, or quick swimming trips to the local waters in the area. Later in life, the time spent with his children and grandchildren and evenings filled with laughter and stories with his friends and family meant the world to him.

Surviving David are his children, David Ryan Word, Dillon Word, and Derek Word; his lifelong partner of 35 years, Terry Word; bonus children, Michelle Estes, Tiffany Estes, and Melissa Clark; and his sister, Linda Scheurich. Several grandchildren and extended family members also remember him fondly. David was preceded in death by his bonus daughter, Jennifer Estes.

David lived a life marked by hard work, a deep-rooted love for his family, and an enduring passion for music. Although he is no longer with us, the memories of his rich and fulfilling life remain a cherished treasure for all who knew him.

Arrangements for a memorial are being handled by Parker Mortuary, Joplin. Come join us on Thursday July 27th at 5 pm as we gather to remember and honor David's life. Let's share stories and laughter, commemorating a man who touched many lives.
