Gene Apel

Gene Thomas Apel, age 74, Joplin, passed away on Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at his home.

Gene was born February 25, 1949, in Pittsburgh, PA, son of the late Charles and Bobbie Apel. He grew up in West Plains, IL and graduated from High School and attended college before joining the United States Army where he served in Vietnam. 








 He worked for years as a truck driver and was retired from the Military after a total of 23 years in active duty and the reserves before serving his community as a local Police Officer. He was a helicopter pilot during his service in Vietnam. He was proud of his service to his country and community. He was a loving husband and enjoyed being outdoors. He will be missed by many.

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by a sister.








Survivors include his wife of over 30 years, Chris Hoag-Apel of Joplin; stepson, John Dean Hoag and wife Michelle of Singapore; stepdaughter, Tracey Lynn Poston of Boston, MA; grandchildren, Laney Hoag, Jackson Hoag, and Samuel Wang; a brother, Ron Apel of Boulder City, NV.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary with private family services to take place at a later date.

  1. There are a few inaccuracies, Gene was my father and I am his only child. His wife chose not to mention me. That speaks volumes. My dad's parents are Charles and Helen Apel, sister was Sally Apel and brother is Charles Ronald Apel. There are more inaccuracies, but these are the most important that need clarification.
