Jerry Massey

(From Parker Mortuary)

Geraldine “Jerry” Jeannette Massey, age 95 of Joplin, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2023, at The Manor at Elfindale in Springfield, MO. Jerry left this world surrounded by love, family, valued care providers, and angels.

Jerry was born March 30, 1928, to Bertha M. (Crisp) and Harry J. Gordon in Manes, Missouri. On July 22, 1949, she married George E. Massey in Springfield, MO. Jerry and George were married for nearly 65 years separated only by his death in 2014.

Jerry owned and operated a Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio in Joplin for over 60 years. She began her career at a time when not many women were business owners and she felt it was important to encourage and support women as professionals and entrepreneurs. Being in the beauty industry, Jerry was an immaculate dresser and took great care with her make-up, presenting a polished and professional appearance whatever the occasion. She was involved in many local organizations such as the Pilot’s Club, Business and Professional Women, and others.

Jerry was a wonderful cook and enjoyed preparing holiday meals, taking many a meal to her parents and other family members, and making old-fashioned fudge for her customers and friends for the annual Holiday Open House at her studio. Without fail, she would bake a birthday cake for George whose birthday was on Christmas Day.

There was a special place in Jerry’s heart for homeless animals and she adopted and pampered several kitty cats during her lifetime. Jerry loved spending time with her family ending every phone call with, “When are you coming to see me?”

Throughout her lengthy illness, Jerry never lost her compassion for people, her quick wit, or her beautiful smile. The family would like to thank the many care providers and special friends that assisted her during this time. A special thank you to Dianna, Jerry’s hospice nurse, and to Steve Vanderhoof who traveled many a mile with and for Jerry and Nancy over the last few years.

In addition to her mother and father, Jerry was preceded in death by her husband George Massey, brother and sister-in-law Gene and Billy Jo Gordon, brother-in-law Wally Reed, and nephew Kent Gordon.

She is survived by her sister, Lou Nan Reed (Glendale, AZ); nieces, Cindy Reed and Nancy Gordon; nephew, Joe Don Gordon and his wife, Linda; great-niece, Rachel Leppla; and great-nephew, Kyle Gordon.

The family will hold a memorial service at a later date.

Cards to the family and memorial contributions to the Joplin Humane Society may be sent in care of Parker Mortuary.

Cremation arrangements are under the special care of Parker Mortuary.
