Mary Rist

Mary Elizabeth Rist, age 97, of Joplin, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, June 22nd, 2023 at National Healthcare of Joplin.

Mary was born on November 1st, 1925 in Eaton, CO to the late union of George and Hazel (Smith) McConnell. She grew up in a little town called Ashland, KS. Later on, she moved to Meade, KS where she spent many years and raised her children. 

Mary was a stay-at-home wife, mother, and grandmother most of her life. 

She married the love of her life, Leonard Rist, on August 9th, 1942 in Dodge City, KS. Together they were blessed with 49 years before his passing on July 5th, 1992. She enjoyed socializing at restaurants over a cup of coffee. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. Mary was a member at Victory Faith Center for many years until she wasn’t able to drive anymore. She then became a member at Master’s Touch at Messenger Towers.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her son, Ronald L. Rist; daughter, Sharon Johns; two sisters; one brother; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary is survived by her three children, Sue Anne Duggan, of Gainsville, MO, Vivian Heskett, of Joplin, and Donna Barnes, of Joplin; two sisters, Donetta Bennett, of Emporia, KS and Phyllis Clark, of Carthage, MO; one brother, Earl McConnell, of Broken Arrow, OK; 14 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 55 great-great-grandchildren; three great-great-great-grandchildren with one on the way; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be an open viewing on Sunday, June 25th, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary with a private graveside service.
