Mary Bashor

Mary Lee Abernathy Bashor, age 67, a former resident of Mercy Village of Joplin, went home to heaven at 4:41 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 at National Health Care Center.

 Born July 26, 1947 in Upland, CA, she was the daughter of the late Austin and Doris Gonce Abernathy and graduated from Hemet High School in 1965. She moved to Joplin in 1977 from California. Mary owned and operated a day care center, “Oh Happy Day Care Center”, across from the old South Middle School. A member of Faith Tabernacle, she was a devout Christian who served God all of her life. She was a volunteer for Freeman Health Systems and sewed quilts for others through Project Linus. Mary loved to read and enjoyed seeing the snow of the southern California mountains. During her time at National Health Care, she developed a love for painting watercolors, crafting, weaving and Tai Chi.

 Survivors include two sons, Richard Bashor and wife Judy of Joplin, Brian Bashor and wife Robin of Carl Junction, MO; five grandchildren, Emily Bashor and Kelsey Bashor, both of Joplin, Shasta Poole of Carl Junction, Jordan Garren and Brent Bashor, both of Joplin; and a brother, Gene Stewart and wife Barbara of Hemet. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Brent S. Bashor and a brother, Ronald Stewart. 

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary. Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5th at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church with Rev. Joe Crosthwait officiating, after which, the family will receive friends. Memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society.
