Myrl Hawks

(From Knell Mortuary)

Myrl Virginia Hawks, 95, passed away on October 7, 2016 at Oak Pointe Assisted Living Community after a long illness.

Myrl was born on January 9, 1921 on a farm near Arcola, MO to Otis Clifford Cantrell and Mary Griffith Twaddel Cantrell. She was one of 7 children.

Myrl grew up on the farm near Arcola and graduated from Arcola High School. On December 23, 1939, Myrl married Thomas Edwin Hawks. The couple then moved to a farm north of Lockwood, MO where they attended Mt. Nebo Baptist Church of Lockwood. Together they had three children: Rachel Ann Becker, Dale Clifton (Tammy) Hawks, and Peggy Jo (Darrell) Blackford. During this time, Myrl was known for her wonderful cooking skills. Her homemade noodles and chocolate cake recipes continue to be passed down through the generations. She shared her skill in the kitchen by working in the school lunch room at the Lockwood schools for several years where her children attended.

Myrl and Thomas retired from farm life in 1971 and moved to Greenfield, MO. For several years, they both worked at O’Sullivan Industries in Lamar. In 2000, Myrl and Thomas moved to Carthage, MO. Myrl became involved in the Carthage Can Do Senior Center where she enjoyed the activities and socializing with her friends. She attended the Carthage First United Methodist Church. Thomas passed away September 9, 2004.

Myrl’s greatest joy was her family. She found much happiness in her 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and they knew her for her warm and strong hugs. Myrl loved hearing about the antics of the young children and they could make her laugh for hours.

At the time of her death, Myrl was residing at Oak Pointe Assisted Living Community in Carthage. She was warmly cared for by her loving children and the wonderful nursing staff.

Myrl was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas, her brothers and sisters – Francis (Charles) Mitchell, Kenneth (Ruby) Cantrell, Emil (Louise) Cantrell, Nadine (Donald) Gordon, Betty (Fred) Decker, and Billy Cantrell, son-in-law George Becker, granddaughter Kelly Blackford Forst, and great-grandson Adam Lee Forst.

She is survived by her 3 children, 6 grandchildren – Howard (Gina) Becker, Camron (Mike) Watson, Amanda (Ben) Lansford, Daniel (Sonja) Blackford, Lauren (Brent) Schleicher, and Jonathan (Meredith) Hawks, and her 13 great-grandchildren - Bailey Becker, Shane Becker,
