Bill Shields

William Donald “Bill” Shields, 85, Carthage, MO, passed away Friday evening, January 19, 2018 at Webb City Health & Rehab, Webb City, MO. Bill Shields was born November 1, 1932 in Newton County, MO to the late Lone M. Shields and Edith E. (Henry) Shields. He graduated from Sarcoxie High School, Class of 1950. He received his BS in Education from SMS in Springfield, MO. Bill served in the U.S. Navy for 24 years. 

He married Benita Ruth Barkley on October 21, 1952 in Sarcoxie, MO; she survives. Bill worked as a high school social studies teacher for 30 years. He was the Student Council sponsor, golf coach, sports announcer and a Boy Scout Master. His hobbies included stained glass, stone masonry, carpentry/building, and furniture refinishing. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Carthage.

Survivors include his wife, one son, William L. Shields (Linda), Little Rock, AR; one daughter, Maureen D. Comotto (Michael), Carthage, MO; one brother, Steve D. Shields, Stotts City, MO; two sisters, Sue Burton, Chiefland, FL and Janice Lauderdale (Joe), Ash Grove, MO; and four grandchildren, David Comotto, Laura Comotto (Raymond Kirklin), Molly Shields and Drew Shields, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter, Tamara Allison Shields, and three brothers, Wayne, George, and John Shields.

Visitation will be held 6-7 pm, Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Memorial services will be held 10 am, Friday, January 26, 2018 at Knell Mortuary. Rev. James Lee will officiate. Burial will follow the service at Sarcoxie Cemetery, Sarcoxie, MO. Memorial gifts are suggested to First United Methodist Church in care of Knell Mortuary, 308 W.
