Paul Sutton

Paul Alfred Sutton was born in Joplin, Missouri on June 7, 1945, to Charles Sutton and Eva Bailey Sutton. He was the youngest of twelve children. He entered the gates of Heaven at 11:30 a.m. on January 27, 2018, at his home after a valiant eight-year battle against cancer.

Paul grew up in a one-room shack on Black Cat Road, but through perseverance and determination became a successful businessman as owner and operator of Gateway Machine for over 40 years. Paul enjoyed working and even worked full-time until the last two weeks of his life, but he especially enjoyed the friendships he made during his decades in business. Paul married Kamala Leaming on February 15, 2004, in a small chapel in Oklahoma. Although home was wherever they were together, they resided in Avilla, Missouri; Joplin, Missouri; and spent the last nine years on a beautiful farm in Stotts City, Missouri. On this hobby farm Paul spent his time baling hay, raising cattle, admiring the horses, and laughing at the antics of his miniature donkeys, Little Boy and Little Girl. He was passionate about his weekend antique finds and was always excited to bring home a new Aladdin lamp for their collection.

Paul is survived by his wife, Kamala; his son and business partner, Troy Sutton and wife Bridget of Joplin, Missouri; and his daughter, Tammy Vaughn and husband Chris of Rogers, Arkansas. He was also a wonderful father to his step-daughter, Anastzia Tanner. His grandchildren include Jesse Sutton, Lucy Vaughn, Maggie Sutton, and Addison Tanner. He is also survived by the last of his eleven siblings, Mildred Sutton Werth, of Wichita, Kansas, as well as many nieces and nephews. Paul’s legacy lives on through his generous decision to donate his organs to further the battle against cancer.

A memorial service will be held at Carthage Nazarene, 2000 Grand Avenue, Carthage, Missouri, on February 8 from 4:00-5:30. Memorial contributions may be made to Carthage Nazarene for their mission trip to the Dominican Republic this summer.
